Wilbur Smith wins top honors in 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards competition

Cleveland transit project earns Grand Award

Wilbur Smith Associates has won the Grand Award in ACEC Ohio's 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards for planning and designing the Euclid Corridor Transportation Project in Cleveland.

This award, along with six Outstanding Achievement Awards and 16 Honor Awards, was presented at the Council's Annual Meeting luncheon in Columbus on June 23.

The Grand Award-winning project involved the complete reconstruction of Euclid Avenue from downtown Cleveland to East Cleveland, a distance of 5.5. miles, creating a center lane that is used exclusively by state-of-the-art buses operated by the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority.  More than three miles of streets in downtown Cleveland also were rebuilt as part of the project.

New, custom-designed bus stations and shelters were constructed in the street's median, and the aesthetics along the entire length of the project were substantially improved with the addition of new curbs and gutters, lighting, landscaping, traffic signals, signage and public art.

Guidelines and entry rules for the 2011 competition will be transmitted to all ACEC Ohio members in August.
