Bill Would Authorize Postal Service Banking

Legislation to allow the U.S. Postal Service to offer checking accounts and other banking services was introduced in the House. The legislation introduced by Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.) would explicitly authorize the post office to offer a range of financial services and to offer other services it finds “appropriate in the public interest.” Following a January USPS inspector general’s report recommending that the agency partner with banks to offer financial services, ICBA came out in strong opposition to the plan. In a Finer Points blog post, ICBA President and CEO Cam Fine wrote that the Postal Service is failing at the one thing it knows how to do—delivering mail—and that the idea is an attempted government intrusion into the financial services sector.
