Health Communication Unit Call (CSCA 2016-Grand Rapids)

 HEALTH COMMUNICATION INTEREST GROUP
Call for Papers and Panels

2016 Central States Communication Association (CSCA)
Annual Convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan
April 13-17, 2016

Foundation

The Health Communication Interest Group invites submissions of competitive papers, programs, and panels to be considered for programming at the 2016 CSCA conference to be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Our interest group focuses on how health and well-being are embodied, expressed, and promoted through diverse communicative practices. We value scholarship from an array of research traditions. Moreover, we support research examining the communication between providers and receivers of care, development of health campaigns, promotion of ethics, and effects of media, popular culture, and technology on health.

All topics related to health communication are welcomed, especially those focusing on the convention theme, Foundation. The theme invites scholars to consider questions for research, teaching, and practice, such as: How do various areas of communication (e.g., interpersonal, family, small group, organizational) create a foundation of understanding? What foundations are needed to generate more holistic understandings of health, or better understand health across human lifespans? How is the foundation of health as a basic right impeded by legal and socioeconomic changes? How do we build health communication as a foundation in our classrooms? How might we re-envision health communication scholarship as a nexus for building partnerships with practitioners and educators in medicine and public health? How is patient care being redefined through the integration of Western and complementary alternative medical practices? How are ‘health’ and ‘wellbeing’ defined in public discourses and organizational practices, and what values do these conversations promote (or obscure) for selfcare? These questions represent just a few of the many possibilities inspired by the conference theme.

A variety of formats are welcome, particularly those involving competitive papers, panels, and roundtable discussions. In terms of panels, preference will be given to submissions with panelists representing multiple institutions rather than representing a single institution. We also welcome undergraduate and graduate student submissions. Awards will be given to the top student competitive paper and top non-student competitive paper.

Guidelines for Submission:

Competitive Papers:

     ● Only completed papers conforming to current APA standards will be accepted.
     ● Each paper submitted cannot exceed 25 pages, excluding references and appendices. Papers exceeding the maximum page limit will not be considered for review.

     ● A Competitive Paper Submission Form must be submitted along with the paper. This form is located on the CSCA website: www.csca-net.org.
     ● The word “Student” should be marked on all papers written by student (including graduate student) authors. Student authored papers do not include those coauthored with faculty members.
