In Memorium
Renee A. Meyers, Professor of Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee passed away on March 16th after a brief battle with cancer. Renee was an internationally known scholar of group communication who focused on small group decision-making and argument, as well as the role of communication in cooperative learning groups. She authored over 70 published works and was recognized with the Dennis S. Gouran Outstanding Article Award from the National Communication Association Small Group Communication Division twice.
Renee earned her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1987. Before coming to the UWM in 1990, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma. While at UWM, Renee served both as the Chair of the Department of Communication as well as the Director of Graduate Studies. She served as the Chair of both the Group Communication Division and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Initiative for the NCA.
Renee worked tirelessly on improving classroom learning. She served as the Coordinator for the University of Wisconsin System Leadership Site for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for over ten years. Renee took special pride in teaching a required proseminar course for Masters students which introduced several generations of students to the breadth of the discipline as well as basic academic skills. Through this course and many others, Renee touched the lives of many students who credit her with their academic development and success
Renee Meyers was a beloved teacher, mentor, scholar, and friend who will be greatly missed. A celebration of her life and career will be held April 21 on the UWM campus. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers. Online donations may be made at:http://www4.uwm.edu/give_to_uwm/makegift/
