HEALTH COMMUNICATION INTEREST GROUP

Call for Submissions

2014 Central States Communication Association Conference

Minneapolis, Minnesota

ELEVATE!

April 1 – April 6, 2014

The Health Communication Interest Group invites submissions of competitive papers, programs, and panels to be considered for programming at the 2014 CSCA conference to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Our interest group focuses on the ways that health is embodied, expressed, and promoted through diverse communicative practices. We value exploring health and well-being across an array of contexts, including those involving phenomenological inquiry, interpersonal relations, discourse analysis, ethnographic investigation, and organizational and cultural studies. Moreover, we support research interests that examine the communication between providers and receivers of care, development of health campaigns, promotion of ethics, and roles of media and technology. All topics related to health communication are welcomed, especially those that focus on the convention theme, ELEVATE. For instance, how might we raise attention to generational and socioeconomic issues impacting how people experience health today? How do we position and spotlight the health communication field in generating collaboration between practitioners and researchers? In what ways has technology amplified certain health phenomena, practices, and values, and what issues persist beneath the surface—unseen—in the shadows of heightened advancements? These questions are among the many that may be considered when exploring the conference theme.

A variety of formats are welcome, particularly those involving competitive papers, panels, and roundtable discussions. We also welcome undergraduate and graduate student submissions.

Guidelines for Submission:

Papers: Authors must conform to current APA standards and must include a title page that is a separate document from the paper to ensure blind review. Also, please remove all author references in the text of the paper. Indicate if author(s) is/are CSCA members. Students (including graduate students) should type "STUDENT" on the upper right-hand corner of the title page.

  • Individuals may not submit more than one lead authored paper.
  • Each paper submitted cannot exceed 25 pages, excluding references and appendices. Papers exceeding the maximum page limit will not be considered for review.
  • All papers must be submitted electronically using MICROSOFT WORD. Documents sent using any other format will be returned to the sender
  • Awards will be given to the top student competitive paper and top non-student competitive paper.

Panels: Individuals proposing panels must complete and submit the 2014 CSCA Panel Proposal Request, available on the CSCA website. Panel proposals must include the following: (a) title, (b) brief abstract, (c) name of person responsible for the program, (d) names, institutional affiliations, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of each panel participant. Indicate if participants are CSCA members.

Deadline: Submissions must be received by 11:59 pm on Friday, October 4, 2013.

An e-mail acknowledging the receipt of paper and panel proposals will be sent following each submission.

**Note: All media requests should be made at the time of submission. The only media available will be a projector for computers; computers will not be provided, and Internet access will not be available.

Submission: Send all papers and panel proposals electronically to the Health Communication Interest Group program planner: russelll@denison.edu
