This is just a friendly reminder as we get back to school, that the submission deadline for Central States is approaching! It’s October 4, 2013. If you have ideas about panels we should share with other divisions please also let me know ASAP so that we can get those together!

The 2014 Convention theme is “Elevate.” We seek to elevate our research, teaching, and understanding of communication by pushing the boundaries of traditional inquiry.
The Rhetorical Theory and Criticism Interest Group invites all members of CSCA to submit competitive papers, programs, and interactive panels to be considered for programming at the 2014 CSCA conference in Minneapolis. We welcome a range of topics, and we especially encourage members to develop provocative panels around the convention theme.
We welcome a variety of formats, including competitive paper panels, discussion panels, and/or debates. Possible topics for programs include: hierarchy as Kenneth Burke conceived it, the rhetoric of consumerism (aka the “Mall of America”), The rhetoric of Minneapolis sculptures/visual rhetoric, the large immigrant populations living in Minneapolis (Somalis and Hmong), the need to elevate the ethical nature of political discourse in contemporary America, or debates about future directions of the field (visual rhetoric, critical ethnography, environmental rhetoric, etc.).
The Rhetorical Theory and Criticism Division offers two awards for top papers:
The Karlyn Kohrs Campbell Award is named after distinguished scholar Karlyn Kohrs Campbell and is presented to the author(s) of the Top Paper submitted to the Rhetorical Theory and Criticism Interest Group. At the annual convention, the recipient receives a cash award and a certificate.
The David Zarefsky Award is named after distinguished scholar David Zarefsky and is presented to the author(s) of the Top Student Paper submitted to the Rhetorical Theory and Criticism Interest Group. At the annual convention, the recipient receives a cash award and a certificate.
(1) Papers: Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must conform to APA standards and include a title page that is a separate document from the paper, allowing the identity to be concealed. Remove all author references in the text of the paper. Students (including graduate students) should type “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. Indicate if the author(s) is/are CSCA Members. “Student” papers are those that are authored only by the student. Faculty mentors/advisors may not appear as an author on a “student” submission.
(2) Panels: Individuals proposing panels must complete and use the 2014 CSCA Panel Proposal Request Form available on the CSCA website. Panel submissions must also include the following: (a) title, (b) abstract, (c) a complete list of participants along with their institutional affiliations, contact information (address, email, telephone), and if they are CSCA Members.
All papers must be submitted electronically using Microsoft Word. Documents sent using other formats will be returned. An email acknowledging receipt of submissions will be sent to each individual who submits a paper/panel. All media requests must be made at the time of submission. Please only request media if it is absolutely essential to your presentation, as media requests will be closely examined before being approved. Laptop computers will not be made available for presentations.
Submissions must be received by October 4, 2013.
