Annual Convention in Madison, Wisconsin

The Popular Culture Interest Group (PCIG) welcomes submissions of competitive papers and research, discussion panel proposals, and original creative works for the 2015 CSCA annual conference. All submissions (taking the conference theme into consideration or otherwise) are both welcome and encouraged. Submissions promoting scholarship interrogating the production and consumption of popular culture (including but definitely not limited to screen studies, fan studies, music culture, sports culture, popular/trade communication, gaming culture, fashion, food, etc.) are invited and encouraged. The interest group also welcomes scholarship related to a popular communication framework from a broad range of theoretical and methodological approaches including: critical studies, genre studies, image and characterization research, cultural studies, cultural history and audience consumption research. We welcome submissions from faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, and communication practitioners. Preference will be given to those panels that include panelists from multiple institutions.
We especially invite submissions that include the theme of “Convergence,” which includes convergence of scholarship, cultures, and/or institutions. Given the inherently interdisciplinary nature of the study of popular culture, we look forward to the creative ways submissions draw on this theme and encourage submissions which could be co-sponsored with other interest groups. We welcome various types of submissions, including competitive paper panels, response and discussion panels, roundtable discussions, dialogue sessions, and debates. We also invite original creative submissions. Creative works should be distinguished by exploring, celebrating, or critiquing texts or processes of popular culture. Creative works appropriate for submission may include but are not limited to audio, video, illustrations, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction.
The top competitive student paper and the top competitive paper by a faculty member or professional will be given a cash award. Other contributors submitting the top three papers and the top original creative submission will receive recognition.
Guidelines for submission:
Competitive papers must conform to the specifications of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 6th edition. On the title page (separate from the remainder of the document) include the name(s) of author(s), institutional affiliation(s), and contact information. All author references must be removed from the text of the paper. Students submitting papers should mark the title page as a STUDENT submission. Authors should strive to keep their submissions to a maximum of 30 pages (not including title page, references, appendices, etc.). This is not a firm requirement, but it will aid in the reviewing process.A Competitive Paper Submission form MUST be submitted along with the paper. This form is located on the CSCA website: www.csca-net.org
Panel proposals must include a title, the name of person responsible for the program, and names, institutional affiliations, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of each panel participant. Include a 200-word abstract for the panel AND a 100-word abstract or brief explanation for each participant's purpose/perspective. Discussion panels and paper panels MUST be submitted using the respective forms located on the CSCA website: www.csca-net.org
Original creative submissions must include a pedagogical or theoretical rationale for the work (a rationale could be an accompanying full-length paper written for the project or a 2-4 page rationale written for the submission). We especially encourage student projects and/or student/faculty collaborations. Those interested in submitting should contact planner Jennifer Dunn with a brief description of the creative work by September 12, 2014 to begin the submission process.
Submit papers and proposals as MICROSOFT WORD (only) attachments to Jennifer Dunn at CSCAPCIG@gmail.com. Submissions must be received by October 3, 2014, by 5 pm. Only complete papers and/or proposals will be considered.
Upon paper submission, please indicate in your email if A/V equipment is needed. CSCA will attempt to provide LCD projectors and screens. We cannot approve or grant requests for such technology as overhead projectors, VCRs/DVDs, PCs, camcorders, laser printers, satellite links, teleconference equipment, and video data projectors. Individuals may elect to rent such equipment at the conference at their own expense. Such equipment may not be charged to CSCA. Individuals may bring their own equipment, unless prohibited by the conference hotel. Any audiovisual equipment requested by participants at the conference, but not at the time of submission, will not be provided by nor charged to CSCA.
