Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Studies (Tenure-Track)

Washington College

Washington College is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Communication & Media Studies, starting August 2017. This is a full-time tenure-track position. Appointment at the Associate Professor level is a possibility, with an abbreviated probationary period leading to the tenure decision. Candidates should have a PhD in communication, media studies, cultural studies, or a closely aligned field in hand at the start of employment.

In Spring 2016 the Washington College faculty and Board of Visitors & Governors approved a new major in Communication & Media Studies (CMS), a program that benefits from course contributions from multiple disciplines in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The successful candidate will hold the first dedicated CMS faculty line at the College. We are seeking candidates who have the passion and expertise necessary to foster growth of this exciting new program. We will consider candidates from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds; broadly speaking, a generalist in communication/media studies is desired. However, the ideal candidate will also demonstrate a focus on a chosen area of interest that could inform course development, future scholarship, or the overall direction of the new major. Teaching is a priority at Washington College; hence, the ability to teach Introduction to Media Studies, Intermediate Communication and Media Theory, and Research Methods in Communication and Media Studies is a must, though other teaching responsibilities will ultimately be tailored to the successful candidate’s specific areas of expertise. Once the program is appropriately staffed, the successful candidate will be expected to periodically contribute to the college’s first year seminar program. (Faculty are expected to teach three courses per semester.) In addition to a passion for program growth and development, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, a strong interest in developing a career as a teacher-scholar in a liberal arts institution, and show significant promise as a scholar.

Washington College is a private, selective, independent liberal-arts college located in historic Chestertown on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, within easy driving distance to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Its location central to the Chesapeake Bay provides both academic and recreational opportunities.
