Assistant Professor in Communications Media

The Positions: The Department of Communications Media at Indiana University of Pennsylvania; a large, growing, and collegial department; invites applications for two or more full-time tenure-track faculty position(s) at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2014. The Department is production-oriented and seeks colleagues who are prepared to teach courses in our Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. programs, as well as teach courses incorporating production of communications media for creative, instructional and performance purposes. Our curriculum includes courses in photography, communication graphics, multi-media, new media, video, radio and audio. Individuals may indicate interest in teaching one or more of these production specialties. Faculty in the department are expected to work with students to manage projects through all phases of production, including writing and post-production. Candidates who are able to integrate multiple production specialties are highly desirable.

In addition to one of the specialties described above highly sought after candidates may indicate a willingness and ability to supervise the department's undergraduate internship program which includes specific course assignments and time to manage the program as part of the teaching load. This internship program places approximately 125 students per year in professional media facilities for an intensive summer internship experience.

The department includes one of the university’s newest Ph.D. programs in Communications Media and Instructional Technology, a shared Master’s degree in Adult Education and Communications Technology and an undergraduate program of approximately 600 students in the Bachelor of Science in Communications Media. IUP faculty are evaluated on teaching, scholarship, and service, as articulated by the collective bargaining agreement.

Qualifications: Required qualifications: earned doctorate in communications or related field at the time of appointment; advanced knowledge and proficient use of appropriate software for specific production specialties. Preferred qualifications: a combination of teaching and professional expertise including ability to manage a production team; record of scholarship and service; and professional media or production experience. The department is interested in candidates who have the communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues and community members.

The candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during the interview process, which will include a teaching demonstration. Applicants may be assigned to provide instruction through distance education.

Responsibilities: Applicants should be prepared to teach courses at the undergraduate, Master's and doctoral levels, supervise doctoral dissertations and research, advise undergraduate students, and engage in departmental and university service.
