2016 Call for Papers

Call for Papers

107th Annual ECA Convention
Baltimore, Maryland
Wednesday, March 30, 2016-Sunday, April 3, 2016

[R]evolution

In the spirit of [R]evolution, the 107th Convention of the Eastern Communication Association is now taking submissions for the Community College Interest Group!

Papers written by Community College scholars are considered, as are papers dealing with topics pertaining to:
-       Interest of the community college faculty and their students (Pedagogy, pay, benefits, workplace community, student body population, diversity, Honors applicability, transferability, funding, scheduling, laws, policies, retention, certification viability, etc.).

-       Any scholarship you, the community college professor, are doing at your own college.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: OCTOBER 15, 2015.

We are accepting submissions in the following TWO forms:

1)    Compete Papers
2)    Panel Proposals

1) Submission of Complete Papers (may include a single paper, an extensive literature review, or other form of original scholarship)

Submissions of complete papers should include the following elements, in 2 separate files/attachments:

FILE/ATTACHMENT #1: A title page including:

  1. A brief abstract
  2. The title of the paper
  3. The name of each Author, including Author’s affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and email address
  4. For papers written by more than one Author, please include the contact information for each Author (name, affiliation, address, phone #, & e-mail) AND indicate who will be presenting at the convention
  5. The statement of professional responsibility** (found below)

FILE/ATTACHMENT #2: The complete paper.

  1. The word “Debut” should be marked on any paper written by an Author(s) who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention
  2. Papers that are “nearly complete” may be submitted, as long as the full work will be completed one month prior to the convention.

2) Submission of Program/Panel Proposals (A finished group of papers, projects, or speakers where typically 3-5 panelists present individual work around a specific group topic. Panels will include a Chairperson and Respondent. Presentation styles may vary. Consider presenting your work as a debate, a workshop sessions, a roundtable discussion, a rhetorical performance, etc.).

Submissions of program/panel proposals should include the following elements in 1-2 separate files/attachments:

FILE/ATTACHMENT #1 – REQUIRED: A title page including: 

  1. A thematic title for the program
  2. Names of the Chair and Respondents (if any). Chairs should not also be designated as respondents
  3. Name, affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and email address of all participants (Chairs, Respondents, Presenters)
  4. Titles and abstracts for each paper or presentation
  5. Program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program
  6. A detailed rationale for the program/panel
  7. Presentation style (traditional panel, debate, workshop sessions, roundtable discussion, rhetorical performance, etc.)
  8. The statement of professional responsibility** (found below)

FILE/ATTACHMENT #2 – NOT REQUIRED: The complete papers:

  1. If the Presenters so choose, they may send along the individual papers that will be shared in the panel presentation. This is not required
  2. The word “Debut” should be marked on any paper written by an Author(s) who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention
  3. Papers that are “nearly complete” may be submitted

** Statement of Professional Responsibility (this MUST be included with every submission of a paper or panel in order for it to be eligible for review).

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.

Co-sponsorship of panels between Interest Groups is especially encouraged! For example, the intersection of instructional and organizational communication in Workplace Learning and Human Performance Improvement or the intersection of Rhetoric and Media education within a lower level college course. 

Additional pertinent information regarding the conference:

  1. Faculty, please consider sponsoring student submissions to the Undergraduate Scholars’ Conference &/or the Graduate Poster Sessions. This is a really great way to get our students involved in research and conventions! Please look for a separate call for participants.
