2016 Call for Papers

RHETORIC & PUBLIC ADDRESS INTEREST GROUP

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

107th Annual ECA Convention

[R]evolution

Baltimore, MD

The Hyatt Regency

March 31st – April 3rd

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2015

The Rhetoric and Public Address Interest Group invites submissions for the 107th Annual ECA Convention. We invite competitive papers, thematic panels, roundtables, workshops, performances, debates, community programs, and other innovative programs.

The Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group conceives its mission as the scholarly study of rhetorical artifacts, modes, theories, and practitioners from a host of cultures and traditions, and their profound implications for public life in local, national, and transnational contexts. We celebrate a rich tradition of studying classic speeches and speakers, while also encompassing an expanded view of the nature of rhetorical inquiry into visual, material, and performative media and the recovery of often historically marginalized voices and movements. Through a diversity of lenses, Interest Group members examine particularly the tensions between “text” and “context” as they touch upon perennially important debates around history, power, ideology, ethics, and social change.

The convention theme is [R]evolution. During the time that Baltimore served as the temporary capital for the 13 colonies, the Second Continental Congress authorized Mary Katherine Goddard, a Baltimore publisher, to print the first copies of the Declaration of Independence for distribution. The courage of the signers and the wide distribution of their work led to radical, pervasive changed in the status quo. Submissions which reflect the theme of [R]evolution and explore courageous evolution or change in rhetoric and public affairs scholarship are particularly welcome.

The Rhetoric and Public Address Interest Group welcomes submissions from scholars at all stages in their academic career. All submissions, which should fall into one of the two categories listed below, must be received by 11:59 PDT October 15, 2015 in order to be considered.

Submissions to the Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group must be sent via e-mail, with attachment(s), to the 2016 Program Planners, Michael Tumolo, California State University at Stanislaus, and Jill Weber, Hollins University, at ECARhetoric@gmail.com.

All submissions should include the text “ECA 2016 Submission” in the subject line of the email.

Please also include any specific requests for technology in the text of the email submission. Note that reasonable requests for technology support will not be met unless they are received by the Program Planner at the time of the paper or program/panel submission. Please see ECA’s technology policy: http://www.ecasite.org/aws/ECA/pt/sp/p_convention_technology.

Competitive Papers

Abstracts or incomplete papers are not acceptable in this category, and submitted papers should not have been presented at previous conferences or accepted for publication at the time of submission. Only electronic submissions are allowed, and should be in doc. or docx. form. Submissions of completed papers (no more than 25 pages, excluding title page, abstract, references, and appendices) should include TWO attachments to the email address listed above:

  1. First attachment: A title page with the title of the paper, author’s name, author’s affiliation (for multiple authors, please indicate which will be presenting), mailing address, telephone number, and email address. This title page should also include a 150-200 word abstract of the paper and ECA’s Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below). Please clearly indicate if this is a STUDENT or DEBUT paper in the upper right hand corner of the title page—STUDENT papers refer to ones written by current undergraduate and graduate student submitters and must have student status at time of submission; DEBUT papers refer to those whose authors have not previously presented a paper at a regional, national, or international convention.
  2. Second attachment: The full paper, including references, visuals, tables, appendixes. The first page of the full paper should repeat the title, 150-200 word abstract, and ECA’s Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below). However, no identifying information about the author(s) should be included anywhere in this attachment. Please also indicate (as with the first attachment) if this is a STUDENT or DEBUT paper in the upper right hand corner of the first page of the paper.

Program/Panel Proposals

All program/panel submissions should be sent as ONE attachment in doc. or docx. form, and must include:

  1. A thematic title for the program/panel. It is also helpful if the title includes the type of format that will be used: panel, workshop, round table, symposium, debate etc.
  2. The name of the Chair and Respondent (if any). Note that chairs and respondents are not allowed to serve as panelists. We would also prefer that chairs and respondents not be the same person.
  3. The names, institutional affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of all participants.
  4. Titles and 150-200 word abstracts for each paper or presentation (if applicable to format chosen). Please make it clear what paper/presentation belongs with what author.
  5. The program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.
  6. A detailed rationale for the program/panel. The rationale should also make clear what type of format is being used (panel, workshop, round table, symposium, debate, etc.) and why that format was chosen.
  7. ECA’s Statement of Professional Responsibility(see below).

Statement of Professional Responsibility

When submitting a paper or proposal for review, the following statement MUST be included—see the guidelines above on where this statement should be included in submission. Papers and panels without this statement will not be programmed.

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/we agree to register for the 2016 ECA Convention, pay fees, and present in Baltimore. I/We understand that presenters with last minute emergencies must make arrangements as possible for an alternate presenter as well as communicate their absences to both the Interest Group Program Planner and ECA VP; “no shows” will be removed from the program.
Please contact the R&PA Interest Group Program Planners, Michael Tumolo and Jill Weber at ECARhetoric@gmail.com with any further questions.

Sincerely,

Michael Tumolo and Jill Weber
