[R]evolution: Baltimore

The 107th Annual ECA Convention theme is “[R]evolution: Baltimore.” The submission deadline is Thursday, October 15, 2015 at midnight. The convention will be held in Baltimore, Maryland at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore on March 31st –April 3rd, 2016.

The 2016 Convention theme signals several important topics that encourage philosophical reflection. April 18th, 2016 marks the anniversary of the Baltimore riots in response to the death of Freddie Gray caused by injuries sustained while in police custody. This event sparked public protests reminding us that although race relations in the United States have evolved, we have yet to see a conclusive revolution. The second topic stems from the first because of apparent dialectic between the sudden, visceral, and violet circumstances of revolution and the slow circumspect change suggested by the word evolution.

With these problems to consider, this Call for Papers welcomes completed papers and panel sessions focusing on the following questions: How can the philosophy of communication help us to understand and frame the circumstances of revolution and evolution? What is the potential role of careful thought related to the immediacy of public action? How does the life of the mind influence civic and social life? The convention planners wish to highlight completed papers and deliberative, audience-drawing, and audience-involving panels that encourage public consideration of ideas or debate the merit and direction of our scholarship and pedagogy.

The convention, as always, features panels, round tables, short courses, and programming on the convention theme. In addition, the Sixth Annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (USC) will run concurrently with the ECA convention on Friday and Saturday (April 1-2). USC papers will be accepted through December 19, 2015, to enable scholarly student papers from the fall semester to be submitted.
