ECA 2017 Convention
Interpretation and Performance Studies
Call for Submissions
Freedom to… Freedom From…
Boston, MA
The Omni Parker House
March 29-April 2, 2017

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2016 (midnight deadline)

The Interpretation and Performance Studies Interest Group invites the submission of competitive papers, live performances, mediated performances, and thematic program/panel proposals for the 108th annual convention of the Eastern Communication Association.

The theme for 2017 is “Freedom To…Freedom From…” Performance is intertwined with issues related to freedom: performing freedom of speech (banned performances or books), freedom from theatrical or disciplinary traditions, and freedom to perform scholarship in innovative forms. Some other areas for exploration might be:

  • Performance and Social Justice: Performance as a method of advocating for freedom from oppression/discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, disability status.
  • Portrayals of Freedom in Performance: How live and mediated performances, films, & television shows portray freedom and its opposite (slavery, subjugation, restriction, captivity)
  • Free to Be You and Me?: How multiple identities are enabled, prohibited, performed or misperformed in various contexts and cultures.
  • Performance history: Examining how performance traditions such as multimedia performance, performance ethnography, improvisation, and performance art express freedom from certain artistic conventions.
  • Freedom for whom?: questioning how one group or person’s freedom to act or speak may infringe on another person or group’s freedom.
  • Failures of Freedom: performances of dystopic literature, performances of imprisonment, tyranny, and disempowerment.
  • Freedom from the Theme: Papers, panels, and performances that are not related to the theme are also welcome.

We especially encourage co-sponsored submissions between the Interpretation and Performance Studies Interest Groups and other Interest Groups that promote interdisciplinary collaboration. Whatever your specialization or background, I hope that you will join us in creating a community of scholars that are interested in exploring performance and performativity as an important site of communication.
