Call for Papers

Philosophy of Communication Interest Group
108th Eastern Communication Association Convention

Freedom To…Freedom From…

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2016

Submission Email: amckendree@nd.edu

The 108th Annual ECA Convention will be held in Boston, Massachusetts at the Omni Parker House from March 29th –April 2rd, 2017.

No city in the United States is associated more with the tensions inherent in the concept of freedom than Boston, the site of our 2017 convention.   Our presence in Boston invites us to consider how the tensions in freedom are also present in our discipline.

The Convention theme signals several important questions that encourage philosophical reflection.

  • What does communication give us the freedom to do?
  • What does it give us freedom from?
  • How can philosophy of communication help us to understand and frame the uses and abuses of free communication?
  • When have others used their freedom to communicate to prevent freedom from other forces?
  • When have we used the freedom to communicate to gain freedom from these forces?
  • What is the potential role of careful thought related to the immediacy of public action?
  • How does the life of the mind influence civic and social life?

With these questions to consider, this Call for Papers welcomes completed papers and panel sessions that encourage public consideration of philosophical ideas or debate the merit and direction of our philosophy of communication scholarship and pedagogy.

The convention features panels, round tables, short courses, and programming on the convention theme. In addition, the Seventh Annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (USC) will run concurrently with the ECA convention on Friday and Saturday (March 31-April 1). USC papers are due on December 10, 2016, to enable scholarly student papers from the fall semester to be submitted.
