Making a Difference
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The Omni William Penn
May 1st to May 4th, 2008
It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 99th annual meeting of the Eastern Communication Association to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the Omni William Penn May 1st through May 4th, 2008. Just as the three rivers in Pittsburgh connect, programming at ECA this year will highlight the connection between research, teaching, and service, and how we as researchers and teachers are Making a Difference.
When we convene each year, we come together as an association to share our research and learn from our colleagues. We enhance our knowledge of communication and consider new paths and future directions for our research. At the core of our scholarship is the confidence that what we do will make a difference within and beyond the discipline.
As communication practitioners, we also strive to make a difference in the lives of our students. By sharing innovative and creative teaching strategies, we learn to engage our students more fully and enrich their educational experiences. We know the impact we make will extend beyond the classroom to their personal and professional lives – thus we are making a difference.
The third prong of making a difference is through our service. Throughout the Eastern Communication Association many of us have incorporated service-learning into the curriculum to link what students study in the classroom with serving the community. This pedagogy allows students, faculty, institutions and the community to work together to foster positive and meaningful changes to make a difference.
As members of the newly named Communication And Technology (formerly Human Information Technology), we have a history of looking at research, teaching, and service. We research how technology impacts human interaction, how we can enhance classroom experiences by utilizing technology or by discussing technology, and we illustrate how our knowledge can serve others. I look forward to receiving a wide variety of both original research and proposed panels for this year’s convention. Please see the following submission guidelines on how to submit to Communication And Technology Interest Group.
