Incorporating Film into the Communication Classroom

This interactive short course will discuss methods and considerations for effectively using film clips in communication classes. Though film is known primarily for its

entertainment value, it can be a useful tool for enhancing communication fundamentals in the classroom. Throughout the course lesson plan ideas and teaching approaches to central communication topics will be provided through the analysis of three motion pictures: Thank you for Smoking, in which the fictional character, Nick Naylor, is a lobbyist working on behalf of the Academy for Tobacco Studies, Twelve Angry Men, which takes place in an emotionally charged jury deliberation room, and Swing Kids, a historical fiction about a counter-culture swing dance movement during the time of Nazi Germany. Preparation, ethical considerations and "post-clip" activities will be presented. Terminology and concepts to be covered include: Toulmin�s Model, inductive and deductive reasoning, Aristotle's Appeals, Cicero's Canons, and rhetorical processes.
