The Kenneth Burke Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association invites submissions of competitive papers, thematic panel program proposals, round-table discussions, and innovative programming alternatives for the 100th annual convention of ECA.
This milestone 100th annual meeting of the Eastern Communication Association will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Sheraton Society Hill from April 22-26, 2009. As the recognized birthplace of our nation, Philadelphia is the ideal location to reflect upon and celebrate a convention with the theme "Defining Moments: A Century of Communication."
The interest group welcomes papers, panel proposals, and other creative proposals in keeping with the convention theme and that engage Kenneth Burke's theoretical and critical approach, examine rhetorical artifacts or contemporary historical events from a Burkean perspective, situate Burke's ideas with respect to other lines of scholarship, or take Burke's scholarship in a new direction.
Competitive Papers
Submissions of completed papers should include the following
- A detachable title page with the title of the paper, the author's affiliation, and the author's complete contact information: mailing address, telephone(s), and e-mail address.
- The word "Debut" on the title page if the author has not presented previously at a regional or national convention.
- A 75-word abstract on the second page.
- A statement of professional responsibility on the second page (see below).
- Four copies of the completed paper. If a paper has multiple authors, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention. Papers should not exceed 25 double-spaced typewritten pages (excluding abstract, references, and notes). Papers should not have been presented previously at other conferences.
Program Proposals
Submissions of panel, round-table, or other types of proposals should include the following:
- A thematic title for the program.
- The names of chair and respondents, if any.
- The names, institutional affiliation, and complete contact information for all participants: mailing addresses, telephone(s), and e-mail addresses.
- Title and abstracts for each paper or presentation.
- Program copy (no more than 75-words) as it will appear in the final version.
- A detailed rationale for the panel/program.
- A statement of professional responsibility (see below).
- Four copies of all of the above.
Statement of Professional Responsibility
The following statement of professional responsibility must be included in all submissions:
"In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/we agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees."
For full consideration, four copies of papers and program proposals must be received no later than October 15, 2008, by the Kenneth Burke Interest Group Program Planner. Per recommendation of the ECA First-Vice President, submissions must be hard copy only. Send to the following address:

ECA's 2009 convention will feature Centennial Scholar programming, short courses, poster sessions, roundtables, and panels. In addition, the Basic Course Conference will be held on the first day of the convention. Proposals addressing the convention theme but not directly related to one of the interest group areas should be sent to Candice Thomas-Maddox, ECA First Vice-President.
