Call for Papers
Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group

Eastern Communication Association Centennial Meeting
Sheraton Society Hill, Philadelphia, PA, April 22-26, 2009

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2008.

The Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group invites submission of competitive papers, thematic panel proposals and innovative programming alternatives for the 2009 ECA Annual Meeting.

The theme of the convention is "Defining Moments: A Century of Communication."  The Rhetoric & Public Address interest group encourages submissions that address the convention theme.  Defining moments may include addresses where rhetoric changed history, failures of public address, changing definitions of public address, new or altered genres of public discourse, defining publications or developments in the theory and methodology of rhetoric and public address, etc.  General information about the call for papers and the convention theme may be found at http://ecasite.org/.

Submissions to the Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group should adhere to the following guidelines:

Competitive Papers

Authors are invited to submit completed papers dealing with rhetoric and public address from any theoretical, methodological or critical perspective.  If papers have been presented at a previous convention, accepted for publication or delivered in another public presentation, this fact should be made clear at the time of submission.

Competitive paper submissions should include:

  1. A detachable title page with the title of the paper, names of all authors, their institutional affiliations, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. In cases of multiple authorship, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention;
  2. A statement of professional responsibility that states, "In submitting the attached paper, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this paper if it is accepted. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees." Papers that do not include this statement will not be programmed;
  3. A 100-150 word abstract of the paper. The title of the paper should appear on the same page as the abstract;
  4. Excluding notes and references, papers must be no longer than 25 pages. Papers longer than 25 pages may not be reviewed;
  5. 5. No information that identifies the author(s) should appear anywhere in the submission beyond the title page; and,
  6. 6. Authors who have not presented a paper at a regional, national or international convention should include the word "DEBUT" in the upper right-hand corner of the title page. Papers authored by current undergraduate or graduate students should include the word "STUDENT" in the upper right-hand corner of the title page. All of the paper's authors must meet debut or student criteria for the paper to be so designated.

Panel and Programming Proposals

Panel program proposals should focus on a unifying theme relevant to research, theory or criticism in rhetoric and public address.  Programs may consist of a chair, paper presenters and a respondent; however, round-table discussions, symposia, debates, performance venues, community programs or other unique formats are encouraged.  Respondents may be included or omitted as appropriate.

Innovative program proposals, especially those that provide opportunities for engaged interaction among participants and attendees, are encouraged.  Programs that can be co-sponsored with other interest groups are also welcome.

Panel and programming proposals should include:

  1. Title and rationale for the thematic panel or program;
  2. Title and 100 word abstract of each presentation;
  3. Names, affiliations, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of all participants;
  4. Names, affiliations and contact information for any chairs or respondents;
  5. Copy, for the convention program, that includes a 75-word description of the proposed program and is presented as it would appear in the convention program; and,
  6. A statement of professional responsibility that states, "In submitting the attached program proposal, we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. We agree to present this program if it is accepted. We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees." Submissions that do not include this statement will not be programmed.
