Defining Moments: A Century of Communication

FINAL Call for Papers and Panels
Intercultural Communication Interest Group

Deadline for Submission: October 15, 2008

The Intercultural Communication Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association invites submissions of papers, program proposals, poster displays, and round-table discussions for the 100th annual "Anniversary" ECA Convention in Philadelphia, PA. The convention theme, "Defining Moments: A Century of Communication" encourages us to look at the evolution of our scholarship and its impact on research on culture in the U.S. and around the world.  During this conference, we will explore what it means to engage in culture research and discuss defining moments that intersect culture and communication. Panel topics will be centered around analyses of speeches on race and culture like Barack Obama's controversial speech, the evolution of intercultural communication as a field, advancements in the teaching of intercultural communication, the evolution of specific cultures and the unique ways that cultures influence each other, and how cultures are represented in the media. We encourage other ideas that fit within the context of the 2009 theme.

The 2009 theme provides a landscape for the exploration of critical moments in the development of cross-cultural and intercultural communication scholarship. Our field finds its analytical space in understanding the histories and contexts influencing tensions in cross-cultural interactions that lead to defining moments. Paper submissions should help to illuminate these tensions and foster the development of shared meanings between cultures.  Submissions that are historical, innovative, and interdisciplinary are encouraged. Additionally, ideas centered around the impact of a particular intercultural communication scholar's work are also welcomed.

Please Note: There will be limited AV support for this convention. Please contact the planner before submitting if you require AV.

Submissions of completed papers should include:

(1) A detachable title page with the title of the paper and the author's affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address

(2) The word "Debut" on the title page if the author has not presented previously at a regional or national convention, and/or the word "Student" marked on papers solely written by authors who are currently engaged in undergraduate or graduate studies

(3) A 75-word abstract on the second page

(4) A statement of professional responsibility on the second page (see below).

Please note: If a paper is multi-authored, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention. Papers should not exceed 25 double-spaced typewritten pages (not including abstract, references, and notes), nor should they have been previously presented at other conferences.

Submissions of panel or round-table proposals should include:

(1) A thematic title for the program

(2) Names of chair and respondents, if any

(3) Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and institutional affiliation of all participants
