Call for Papers 2009
PHILOSOPHY OF COMMUNICATION INTEREST GROUP
CALL FOR PAPERS
2009 Eastern Communication Association Convention
Deadline for submissions: October 15, 2008
The Philosophy of Communication Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association invites submissions of papers, program proposals, and round-table discussions for the 100th annual ECA Convention to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The convention theme, "Defining Moments: A Century of Communication," seeks to identify and explore various areas of scholarship that have defined the communication discipline over the past century. Paper and program proposals that address this theme or other communicative topics through a philosophical lens are welcome.
The 2009 convention will feature a Centennial Scholarship Series that is devoted to recognizing scholars from each of the interest groups who have made a significant contribution to the field of communication. In addition to the Centennial Scholarship Series, programming will consist of short courses, poster sessions, workshops, roundtables, and panel proposals.
Submission of Completed Paper:
Completed papers should be submitted by email as two Word files. In the first file: (1) create a title page that includes the title of the paper and the author's affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address, (2) type the word "debut" on the title page if all authors have not presented previously at any regional or national communication convention, (3) include a one-page abstract on the second page, (4) include the statement of professional responsibility on the second page (see below), (5) If the paper is multi-authored, please indicate who will be presenting the paper at the convention if the work is accepted. In the second file submit the completed paper without title page.
Submission of Panel or Round-table Proposal:
Panel or round-table proposals should be submitted by email as one Word file. In the submission, include: (1) a thematic title for the program, (2) names of chair and respondents, if any, (3) names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and institutional affiliation of all participants, (4) titles and abstracts for all papers or presentations, (5) program copy (a 75-word description) as it will appear in the final program, (6) a detailed rationale for the program/panel, (7) the statement of professional responsibility (see below) to which all presenters agree.
Statement of Professional Responsibility:
As noted above, the following statement of professional responsibility must be included in all submissions:
In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/we agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees.
Equipment Requests:
Equipment rental at conventions is very expensive, and ECA has a limited budget for this purpose. Please try to structure your presentation in such a way that equipment is not necessary. If such equipment is absolutely required, you are invited to bring your own equipment. You may request technology needs at the time of the paper/panel submission (list on the title page and reiterate in your e-mail); however, it is unlikely that we will be able to provide it.
Send papers and program proposals by e-mail attachment no later than midnight October 15, 2008 to arneson@duq.edu. Any questions, programming suggestions, and ideas concerning the Philosophy of Communication Interest Group are welcome.
