Call for Proposals

2011 Eastern Communication Association’s 102nd Annual Meeting

Key Bridge Marriott, Arlington, VA

April 13-17, 2011

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2010

The Eastern Communication Association invites submission of proposals or short courses to be offered at the 102nd ECA Annual Meeting to be held in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC.

The convention theme, “Communication and Power: From Classroom to Politics,” reflects our convention’s location in the seat of American federal government.  Power is certainly ever-present in Washington, DC. However, it is also present—or painfully absent—in a wide range of venues that the communication discipline investigates. It is an issue in our classrooms, in extracurricular life, in our academic and non-academic business places, and in our healthcare facilities; it is depicted in and expressed through the media; it is entailed in interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, group work, organizational communication, and public forums. Our hope is that this year’s short courses will deal with the various dimension of our discipline with this theme of power very much in mind.

Short Course Submissions should include the following:

  1. Title for the proposed short course;
  2. Rationale (750 words) for the course discussing its audience, the benefits that audience will receive, its relationship to the overall conference theme, and the need for the course at this particular time;
  3. Names, affiliations, addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of all participants;
  4. A brief summary (75 words each) of each participant’s role in the course;
  5. An outline/schedule of the course and a brief discussion of the format/s that the course will use to engage attendees in the course;
  6. A list of audio-visual needs;
  7. Copy, for promotional material and the convention program, that includes a 75 word description of the program and is presented as it would appear in the convention program;
  8. A state of professional responsibility: “In submitting the attached short course proposal, we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. We agree to offer this course if it is accepted. We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.” (A waiver of fees might be available for non-academic communication practitioners. Proposers should contact the unit’s planner.)

Please note that Requests for Technology must be made at the time of submission. Any requests made after that time will not be honored.

Proposals must be submitted in Microsoft Word. Only electronic submissions will be reviewed.

Submissions should be e-mailed to Theodore F. Sheckels, the Short Course planner, at tsheckel@rmc.edu. They must be received by October 15, 2010. Questions should be addressed to Sheckels at tsheckel@rmc.edu or (804) 752-7288.
