ECA 2009 Call for Papers

Reminder: Call for Papers & Panels

Theory & Methodology Interest Group

Eastern Communication Association
100th Annual Convention

April 22 - April 26, 2009

Convention Theme:
Defining Moments: A Century of Communication
Sheraton Society Hill
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Theory & Methodology Interest Group invites your submission of competitive papers, panel proposals, and/or alternative format programs for the much anticipated 100th Annual Convention of the Eastern Communication Association.

The convention theme, "Defining Moments: A Century of Communication," invites our scholarly reflections on ECA, celebrating our roots and the significant changes that have contributed to the current state of the discipline. In 1910, three scholars gathered to plan the nation's first professional communication conference at Swarthmore College. At that inaugural Eastern Public Speaking Conference, 15 college teachers from five states and the District of Columbia gathered with a sole focus on public speaking. Now, the ECA boasts over 760 members from over 40 states and five countries, and the breadth of communication studies we teach and research is reflected in our 19 interest groups and affiliate organizations. In Philadelphia is where we began, and to Philadelphia in 2009 we shall return!

In keeping with the conference theme, each interest group within ECA will undoubtedly be highlighting "defining moments" relative to their interest area. However, can you think of any defining moment in our discipline that does not include or relate to theory or methodology? Indeed, in this Centennial celebration, our Theory & Methodology Interest Group is in a special position to recognize defining theoretical and methodological contributions that have changed the pursuits of the entire discipline of communication and/or are threads throughout several sub-disciplines.

As such, you are encouraged to submit collaborative panels, roundtables, open forums, symposia, debates, etc., that spotlight particular theorists, theoretical advances, methodologists, or methodological advances - from our "founding fathers" to future questions. As always, you are also invited to submit the traditional competitive paper or panel proposal about theory and methods topics and issues.

Please send four hard copies of your paper and/or panel or special program proposals so they will arrive by October 15, 2008. Please refer to the submission guidelines below.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 518-564-2080 or elizabeth.bernat@plattsburgh.edu

Sincerely,

Elizabeth R. Bernat, Ph.D.

All ECA 2009 planners encourage paper and panel submitters to structure your presentations in such a way that equipment and internet connectivity is not needed. If equipment is absolutely required, we encourage you to provide your own. If this is not possible, you must describe and justify your equipment needs in a cover letter that accompanies your submission so that we can adequately accommodate your request.
