KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
The Keynote Speakers for the conference are Dr. Brenda J. Allen, Dr. Amit Pinchevski, and Dr. Gerard A. Hauser.
Brenda J. Allen is an Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a Professor in the Department of Communication, University of Colorado Denver. Her research and teaching areas include organizational communication, diversity, group communication, and computer-mediated communication. Among her numerous publications is a groundbreaking book entitled Difference Matters: Communicating Social Identity. She has published numerous articles and presents on Difference Matters at college campuses nationally
She has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Francine Merritt Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Lives of Women in Communication from the National Communication Association (2004). In January 2006, she received the first Annual Award for Outstanding Achievement for Commitment to Diversity at the University of Colorado Denver. She also was named a Master Teacher (2007-2008) by the Western States Communication Association. In 2011, she received the first Annual Award for Excellence in Faculty Mentoring from the University of Colorado Denver and the Paul H. Boase Prize for Scholarship from Ohio University for distinguished scholarship in the field of communication; she also was the Carroll C. Arnold Distinguished Lecturer at the National Communication Association’s annual convention.
Dr. Amit Pinchevski is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He is noted for his work in articulating the philosophical contribution of Emmanuel Levinas to the discipline of communication. He is the author of By Way of Interruption: Levinas and the Ethics of Communication and editor (with Paul Frosh) of Media Witnessing: Testimony in the Age of Mass Communication. In his many journal articles and book chapters, Pinchevski attempts to rethink the traditional premises of communication, covering a range of topics from Levinas’s ethics of communication, through cultural analysis of autism, and most recently the intersections of media, trauma and witnessing.
Gerard A. Hauser is the College Professor of Distinction in Communication at the University of Colorado Boulder. His research focuses on the history of rhetorical theory, the role of rhetoric in a democracy, dissident rhetoric, and the interaction between formal and vernacular rhetorics in the public sphere. Dr. Hauser has published 64 articles, edited 3 books and written 2, Vernacular Voices: The Rhetoric of Publics and Public Spheres, and Introduction to Rhetorical Theory. In 2007, the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder named him a College Professor of Distinction. His forthcoming book Prisoners of Conscience: Moral Vernaculars of Political Agency will be published in Fall 2012.
Hauser is a Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association (NCA) and a Fellow of the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA). He is recipient of RSA’s George E. Yoos Distinguished Service Award, its highest recognition. Other distinctions include NCA’s Marie Hochmuth Nichols Book Award, RSA’s Charles Kneupper Outstanding Article Award, Campus Compact’s Intermountain West Engaged Scholar Award. In addition, two awards were named in his honor: the Gerard A. Hauser Prize for Undergraduate Research established by Penn State, and the Gerard A. Hauser Graduate Scholarship for outstanding graduate student paper established by RSA.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: March 16, 2012
The 12th National Communication Ethics Conference is June 13-15, 2012, at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA. Scholars from related communication disciplines are invited to submit papers and panel proposals.
The conference theme is "Communication Ethics: Attending to the Other." The conference encourages scholarly exploration of historical and contemporary questions in human communication ethics.
For scholarly participation in the conference, papers may address a variety of communication ethics issues arising from multiple disciplinary perspectives.
CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANELS
All papers and panel proposals must be received by midnight March 16, 2012 to be considered for inclusion in the conference. Of particular interest are papers relating to communication ethics in three conceptual threads to be led by visiting scholars:
* Philosophy of communication/ethics
* Communication theory/ethics
* Corporate communication/ethics
Submissions should be double-spaced, with a maximum of 30 pages, including references. Any citation style is permitted (e.g., MLA, APA, Chicago). Please indicate on the title page if the author is a graduate student and also if this presentation will be the author's first at a professional conference (a debut presentation). Send papers as attached files via email to cec@duq.edu.
Panel Proposals may include up to five participants and a respondent. Please include one title page with a 500-word (maximum) abstract and rationale for the panel. Each presenter should include a title and 200-word abstract. Send the panel proposal as an attached file via email to cec@duq.edu.
GRADUATE FELLOWS
Potential Graduate Fellows must be graduate students submitting single-authored papers and be currently enrolled in M.A. or Ph.D. programs other than Duquesne University. Conference planners will select the top graduate student papers and invite the authors to participate in the conference as Graduate Fellows. Graduate Fellows present their papers in a spotlight session and are guests of honor at a special reception on the final evening of the conference.
REGISTRATION
Faculty: $385.00, includes registration fee and meals.
Student: $285.00, includes registration fee and meals.
