ECA 2013 Convention - REMINDER - Call for Papers - Organizational Communication Interest Group

Call for Papers 2013

Organizational Communication Interest Group

104th Annual Eastern Communication Association Convention

“Confluence”

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Omni William Penn Hotel

April 24-28, 2013

Submission Deadline: Monday, October 15, 2012

The Organizational Communication Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association invites the submission of competitive papers, thematic program/panel proposals, and innovative programming alternatives (e.g., roundtable, workshop session, symposium, debate, open forum, and community program) for the 104th annual convention of the ECA. The 2013 convention’s theme is “Confluence.” Confluence is the bringing together of research and ideas from various perspectives and may take place within and across organizations and in the workplace, in the communicative aspects of job roles or responsibilities, or in the climate, culture and change within organizations. We welcome all organizational communication-related submissions, but particularly encourage those that address the conference theme.

Downtown Pittsburgh itself emerged where the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers forms the Ohio River. “Confluence” is exemplified by the long tradition of communication research bringing together ideas from various perspectives of communicator, message, channel, and context to better understand how humans create meaning and relationships. “Confluence” also describes the best in our interdisciplinary scholarship. Given this year’s convention theme, co-sponsorship of panels between interest groups is especially encouraged where scholarship builds on convergence between traditions.

The Convention, as always, features panels, roundtables, short courses, and programming on the Convention theme. In addition, the biennial Basic Course Conference will take place on Wednesday (April 24th) and the Third Annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (USC) will run concurrently with the ECA convention on Friday and Saturday (April 26-27).  USC papers will be accepted through December 19, 2012 to enable scholarly student papers from the fall semester to be submitted and should be submitted to that division.

Submissions to the Organizational Communication Interest Group should adhere to the following guidelines:

PANELS AND OTHER PROGRAM FORMATS

Panels and other program format proposals (see full descriptions of categories below) should focus on a unifying theme relevant to research, theory, or practice in the area of organizational communication. Panels or other program format themes should attempt not to repeat session topics from past conferences. Panels or other program formats are encouraged to include presenters from more than one institution. Panels and other programs that could be co-sponsored with other interest groups are strongly encouraged - please send your panel to both interest groups at the same time so that those planners may manage the submission together.  Please note in your email your intention to have the panel co-sponsored and by what other interest group if that is your plan.

Program ideas for submissions can be of several types and some are identified below. Creativity is encouraged when designing program proposals. Please label all submissions with a title from one of the following categories:

Panela program where three to four speakers present individual papers on a specific topic area.  Each panel will have a chair to introduce each paper and moderate the presentation of papers and any discussion; a respondent should also be provided as deemed by the panel members.

Workshop Sessiona program led by two or three experts on a particular topic with audience involvement and participation.

Round Table Discussiona program featuring 5-8 presenters who briefly share a position paper or summary of recent research on a focused topic moderated by a chair with “on-the-spot” interaction and discussion by participants and audience.

Symposiuma program where three to five invited speakers present a predetermined section of specific topic introduced by a chair who initiates audience participation through questions and answers or in an open forum.

Debatea traditional debate on an announced topic within pro and con statements and rebuttals.

Open Foruma semi-structured public discussion of a predetermined topic of interest introduced and moderated by a chair. The goal of such a program is to share information, ideas, concerns, and special interests.

Community Program: a structured program inviting the public to attend.  It may take the form of a town hall meeting for open public discourse concerning a selected topic (perhaps related to the convention theme) or maybe even a performance-related program that engages communication scholarship and community interests.

Panel and other program format proposals should be emailed as MS WORD files and include the following:

1.      A thematic title for the program

2.      Names of the chair and respondents, if any.  Please do not have chairs act as respondents.

3.      Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants.

4.      Titles and abstracts for each paper or presentation, as appropriate

5.      A program copy (of NO MORE than 75 words description of the panel) as it should appear in the final program

6.      A detailed rationale for the program/panel

7.      A statement of professional responsibility “In submitting the attached panel or program, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or program if it is accepted. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees.”

REQUESTS FOR TECHNOLOGY must be made at the time of submission and we will attempt to make arrangements as resources allow. Any requests made after that time cannot be honored.
