Great Ideas for Teaching Students, G.I.F.T.S.

The Community College Interest Group is seeking submissions for the G.I.F.T.S. program at 104th annual convention of the Eastern Communication Association. The theme of this year’s convention is “Confluence.” We encourage members from a wide range of interest groups to submit a G.I.F.T.S.

Any faculty member or graduate teaching assistant at any type of institution may submit a class-tested G.I.F.T.S. Your submission may be an activity, assignment, project, game, or simulation addressing a specific communication theory, concept, skill or learning objective appropriate to the communication discipline. Submissions should be geared toward college communication courses (public speaking, interpersonal, small group, theory, etc.) and should be easily explained in less than ten minutes.

Here’s how G.I.F.T.S. works:

  1. The presenter needs to have a short, comprehensive handout that explains the learning objectives and process of the teaching idea.  One page is best.  Each presenter needs to bring at least 30 copies of their G.I.F.T.S. for distribution at the program.
  2. G.I.F.T.S. is done panel style, each presenter having seven to ten minutes to share their G.I.F.T.S., depending on the number of G.I.F.T.S being presented.

Guidelines for Submission:

  1. Choose a “great idea” that you have successfully used in the classroom.
  2. Create a proposal. The proposal should include the following items:
    •  an abstract
    •  a rationale for the activity
    •  directions for the activity
    •  an explanation of the connection to concepts, theory, and/or skills, and
    •  typical results
  3. The proposal should be no more than 1-2 pages long.   A bibliography may be included, if relevant.
  4. Submissions must include a cover page with the submitter/s full contact information and institutional affiliation.
  5. Send your complete submission to Danamarie Every Gallagher at dgallagher32@dccc.edu  in a Word attachment by October 12, 2012.  Submissions must follow these guidelines or they will not be considered.
