ECA 2014 Convention - Communication Law and Ethics Interest Group Call for Papers

Communication Law and Ethics
Call for Papers 2014
105th Annual Eastern Communication Association Convention

Communities of Dissent: A “Lively Experiment” in
Dialogue, Diversity, and Discourse
Providence, Rhode Island
The Omni Providence
April 23–27, 2014
Submission Deadline: October 15, 2013

The Communication Law and Ethics Division of the Eastern Communication Association invites the submission of competitive papers, thematic program/panel proposals, and innovative programming alternatives (e.g., roundtables, symposia, debates, open forums, and community programs) for the ECA's 105th annual convention. Founded as a haven for religious dissenters, Providence is a city intimately shaped by discourses of disagreement and dissent. This year’s conference theme, “Communities of Dissent,” is inspired by a tradition of dissent that has marked the city’s long and notable history. However, dissent is multifaceted. It can be both a transformational experiment in tolerance and freedom of conscience, or it can be dangerous and detrimental to tolerance and freedom. The division is seeking submissions that deal specifically with this year's theme of dissent. The Communication Law and Ethics division is seeking submissions from a wide range of communication scholars and researchers who all, in some way, examine issues of ethics and/or law within their disciplines. The division welcomes submissions from those who critique, examine, discuss, and/or analyze law and/or ethics in gender studies, critical race theory, rhetoric, cultural studies, mass communication/media studies, fat studies, disability studies, feminist theory, and all other areas of scholarly interest and research in communication. The division is especially interested in discussions and critiques of national and international events that deal specifically with dissent and disagreement. The division also welcomes non-academic professionals from a variety of related fields as well as emerging and seasoned scholars outside of communication who have an interest in communication law and/or ethics.
