Founded as a haven for religious dissenters, Providence is a city intimately shaped by discourses of disagreement. This year’s conference theme, “Communities of Dissent,” is inspired by the tradition of dissent that has marked the city’s long and notable history. Dissent can be transformational, a lively experiment in tolerance and freedom of conscience. When accepted and encouraged, dissent can be an important monitoring force, providing correctives for unethical behavior, unfavorable decision-making, and insensitivity to others’ needs. Dissent can also be dangerous, undermining sound and orderly government, and fueling conflict and aggression. This year’s theme explores the expression and suppression of dissent across communication contexts—relational, organizational, mediated, social, and political—and the attendant implications for such concerns as relational quality, community identification, civic engagement, public dialogue, accountability, and justice.
Papers for the Graduate Poster Session will be accepted from every sub-discipline in the field of communication. Competitive poster presentations involve an author(s) standing next to a physical poster that visually explains the crux of the paper. Convention participants, including judges, read the posters and talk to the authors about their studies. Poster sessions tend to be low key and full of energy. If you have never presented at an academic conference, poster sessions are a less stressful foray into the academic community. You may want to consider making a handout that summarizes your study for people who talk to you during the session.
Submissions of Completed Posters should include several components:
- A title page with the title of the poster and the author(s)’ affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses.
- Mark "Debut" if the author has not presented previously at a regional or national convention.
- A one-page abstract on the second page.
- Statement of professional responsibility should follow the abstract on the second page of the submitted proposal:
“In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.”
