Call for Papers

KENNETH BURKE INTEREST GROUP

105th Annual Convention Eastern Communication Association

“Communities of Dissent:  A ‘Lively Experiment’ in Dialogue, Diversity, and Discourse”

Providence, RI

Omni Providence Hotel

April 23-27, 2014

Submission Deadline: Tuesday, October 15, 2013

The Kenneth Burke Interest Group invites papers, program proposals, and roundtable discussions for the 105th Annual ECA Convention that will be held from April 23-27, 2014 at the Omni Providence Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island.

The convention theme is an excellent one that promises great opportunities for us to participate in meaningful, scholarly dialogue.  “Communities of Dissent:  A ‘Lively Experiment’ in Dialogue, Diversity, and Discourse” is the convention theme. From the Conference theme description:

Founded as a haven for religious dissenters, Providence is a city intimately shaped by discourses of disagreement. This year’s conference theme, “Communities of Dissent,” is inspired by the tradition of dissent that has marked the city’s long and notable history. Dissent can be transformational, a lively experiment in tolerance and freedom of conscience.  When accepted and encouraged, dissent can be an important monitoring force, providing correctives for unethical behavior, unfavorable decision-making, and insensitivity to others’ needs. Dissent can also be dangerous, undermining sound and orderly government, and fueling conflict and aggression.

For the Kenneth Burke Interest Group this theme presents a lot of opportunity to tap into the diverse writings of Burke who was interested in issues of dissent.  Dissent features prominently in Kenneth Burke’s rhetorical, philosophical, psychological, and other writings.  In the spirit of “KB,” and the conference theme, we encourage interdisciplinary scholarship in the submission to the interest group.

In addition, please note that the Fourth Annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (USC) will run concurrently with the ECA convention on Friday and Saturday, April 25-26.  The deadline for the submission of USC papers is December 20, 2013 so as to allow undergraduate student papers from the Fall semester to be submitted.  All such papers should be submitted directly to the USC planner.

General information about the convention and the 2014 Conference can be found at http://associationdatabase.com/aws/ECA/pt/sp/p_convention_main .

Please include “KB Division ECA Submission” in all email subject headings.  All submissions must be sent via e-mail, with attachment(s) in MS Word format, to the 2014 Program Planner:
