ECA Philosophy of Communication - NCA Call for Papers
Call for submissions: The National Communication Association opened its call for submissions for the 100th Annual Convention, November 20-23, 2014 in Chicago.
The Philosophy of Communication Division invites completed individual competitive papers, paper sessions, and panel discussions that interrogate the relationship between philosophical frameworks and our current understanding of communication. As a whole, the Division examines and explores the overlaps, intersections, and complements between philosophy and communication. The Philosophy of Communication Division provides an academic home for work that addresses communication from a philosophical orientation and/or philosophy from a communication perspective, both broadly defined. The Division is open to all traditions of philosophical inquiry (ancient, medieval, modern, contemporary, postmodern, western, eastern, analytic, continental, etc.) and is supportive of semiotic, phenomenological, hermeneutic, critical, psychoanalytic, communicological, narrative, dialogical, and other methodologies that examine communicative experience.
SUBMISSIONS OPEN: Monday, January 13, 2014.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: On or before Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 11:59pm (Pacific Time).

INDIVIDUAL PAPERS
Papers should include a title, a description of no more than 250 words, and have a maximum of 30 double-spaced, 12 point font pages of text (not including tables, figures, cover page, and references). To ensure blind review, submitters MUST REMOVE their names from the cover page before uploading the document, and no information identifying the author may appear in the uploaded paper or the references. Papers where authors are identified in the body/content of the uploaded paper files(s) are ineligible for review. Instructions for how to prepare a blind copy are provided in the Convention Library of NCA Submission Central. Individual papers will be accepted for presentation in the Philosophy of Communication Division and Scholar to Scholar sessions. Scholar to Scholar sessions stress formats that are especially appropriate for visual and aural work, multimedia projects, and interactive presentations. If you believe the content of your paper would be particularly well suited for a Scholar to Scholar session, check the correct agreement box as you electronically submit to the Philosophy of Communication Division. The Division will specify a Top Paper and Top Student Paper award. There is a cash award for the top student paper. If you want to compete for the Top Student Paper Award, please indicate “Student Paper” by selecting the appropriate status during the electronic submission process (all authors must be students). All submissions will be reviewed according to the following criteria: Relevance to the Division, Originality of Thesis, Clarity of Thesis, Quality of Analysis, Contribution to the Understanding of Human Communication, and Quality of Writing.
PAPER SESSIONS
Paper session proposals that reference the convention theme of “The Presence of Our Past(s): NCA at 100” are welcome as well as paper session proposals that do not reference the convention theme. Paper session proposals that thematize a particular philosophical problematic or philosopher are particularly welcome. ALL paper session proposals must include: 1. Chair and Respondent; 2. Titles of papers and a 250-word description for each paper; 3. A 75-word abbreviated theoretical description of the overall session; 4. A rationale of the content and format of the session (including a justification of why the session is appropriate for the Division) that does not exceed 750 words; and 5. Name and affiliation of all paper presenters.
Please specify any audiovisual needs for competitive papers and paper sessions at the time of submission.
PANEL DISCUSSIONS
Panel Discussions that explore emerging themes, conversations, and intersections of philosophy and communication are welcome. Submissions must include the title of panel, description of panel, list of presenters/chair, and rationale for acceptance.
