CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  October 15, 2014

ECA’s Argumentation & Forensics Interest Group invites submissions for our 106th annual convention in Philadelphia. In keeping with the convention theme, we are excited to deliberate on research, teaching, and practice related to argumentation and forensics. After all, our interest group’s members and presenters know a thing or two about deliberation!

We encourage you to come up with your most creative proposals for this year’s convention in Philly. Consider involving audiences—and community members—with panel programs like debates, workshops, roundtables, and symposiums. Regardless of whether your paper or panel title involves the word “deliberation,” we will honor this theme throughout the program. We are excited to see your innovative and engaging takes on this year’s theme, which is so relevant to our interest group.

Philadelphia’s rich history of deliberation makes it the perfect site for our interest group to host many engaging conversations, debates, and arguments on the issues that matter most to our field. This is the city of the First and Second Continental Congresses; of the Constitutional Convention; of North America’s first general labor strike; and even of our nation’s capital for a short time. The spirit of deliberation is well established there, and we are excited to continue it this April.

Guidelines for Submission

In order to receive full consideration by the Argumentation and Forensics Interest Group, completed papers and program/panel submissions must be received no later than the close of business (Eastern time) on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.

Completed Papers – Only completed papers will be accepted.  Submissions of completed papers must include:

  • a detachable title page with the title of the paper, the author’s affiliation, mailing address, telephone number and email address;
  • a one-page abstract of the paper’s content as the second page;
  • the Statement of Professional Responsibility on the second page (see below),
  • if applicable, the word Debut marked on papers written by authors who have never presented previously at a regional or national convention and,
  • if applicable, on papers with multiple authors, the name of the person who will present the paper at the convention.

Program/Panel Proposals – Submissions of program/panel proposals must include:

  • a thematic title for the program/panel,
  • the names of the chair and respondents, if any (please do not have chairs act as respondents),
  • the names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and institutional affiliations of all participants,
  • titles and abstracts for each presentation in the program/panel,
  • program copy of no more than 75 words as it should appear in the final program,
  • a detailed rationale for the program/panel, and,
  • the Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below).

Statement of Professional Responsibility

When submitting a completed paper or program/panel proposal for review, the following statement must be included.  If it is not attached with a submitted document, the chair is responsible for obtaining a completed copy of this statement prior to the completed paper or program/panel proposal being officially programmed for presentation at the convention.  Completed papers and program/panel proposals that do not include the Statement of Professional Responsibility will not be programmed.

In submitting the attached panel or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility.  I/We agree to present this paper or panel if it is accepted and programmed.  I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.

Technology Policy

Technology use at conventions is expensive so the Convention Planner will carefully consider any requests for technology.  Although every effort is made to provide for technology needs requested, the final decision is up to the Convention Planner.  For the complete statement about provision of technology by ECA at its conferences, please see the full text of the ECA Technology Policy.

To Submit a Completed Paper or Program/Panel Proposal

Send submissions via email, with attachments in Microsoft Word format, to Jade Olson, the 2015 Argumentation and Forensics program planner, at jade.olson@gmail.com.

The email subject header should include the abbreviation “ECA” and a brief version of the title of the paper or program/panel proposal.

The email text must include any request for technology (e.g. projectors, video monitors, etc.).  No request for technology support will be met unless it is received by the program planner at the time that the completed paper or program/panel is submitted.
