Do you have a great research project you’d like to share? Would you like the chance to give a presentation to add more depth to your résumé or grad school application? Have you written a paper that would be interesting to discuss outside class? Would you like to meet students and faculty from other schools who share your interest in communication?
We are pleased to invite you to attend the 5th annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Sheraton Society Hill April 24th and 25th, 2015 within the Eastern Communication Association’s 106th Convention. The USC will also center on the ECA convention theme, Deliberation: Philadelphia.
The USC conference will feature some of the best research from undergraduate communication students. Conducting and presenting your original research is a great way to develop your critical thinking and communication skills. Even better, it’s a beneficial way to show those skills off to potential employers and graduate schools, and it gives you the chance to find out what interesting research other students and faculty are doing.
NOTE: Papers for the Undergraduate Scholar’s Conference will be accepted from every sub-discipline in the field of communication. Students should only submit one paper/poster/panel to the undergraduate conference and that submission must include a faculty sponsor. Presentation formats include:
- Competitive Paper Presentations (finished papers of no more than 20 pages)
- Panel Discussions
- Poster Presentations (in progress research seeking professional feedback)
Guidelines for each of these are attached to this call.
Faculty, please note the deadline for submissions is DECEMBER 19, 2014 so please consider creating assignments that could be used for the convention.

Please identify your submission with the subject line: “ECA Graduate Poster Submission”
Submission Format: Please submit two WORD documents. The first document should include your title page. Specifically, this document should include the title of the poster and the author’s institutional affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
The second document should be the same as the first in all ways except that it should contain no author identifying information. This second document should also contain an abstract.
The theme of the convention is [R]evolution. Poster sessions allow for graduate students to have a full professional audience for their research ideas which then can receive significant feedback for moving ahead with projects and ideas. If you have never presented at an academic conference, poster sessions are a comfortable foray into the academic community. Papers for the competitive graduate poster session will be accepted from every sub-discipline in the field of communication.
Competitive poster presentations involve an author or authors standing next to a physical poster that visually explains the crux of the paper, research, or project. Convention participants, including judges, view the posters and talk to the authors about their studies. We strongly encourage all accepted presenters to provide a single or half sheet handout for audiences.
Submissions of Graduate Posters should include several components:
- A title page with the title of the poster and the author(s)’ affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses (first submitted document).
- Mark "Debut" if the author has not presented previously at a regional or national convention.
- A title page with no identifying author information (second submitted document).
- An abstract on the second page (second submitted document).
- A 1 – 2 page description of the research to be depicted, including ideas/questions that will be discussed during your poster session and recommendations for future research (second submitted document).
- Statement of professional responsibility should follow the abstract on the second page of the submitted proposal:
“In submitting the attached poster, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this poster if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.”
The ECA Student Ambassador Program is designed to provide Undergraduate students with the opportunity to, without paying registration fees, attend and participate in the ECA convention and experience an academic service opportunity. It is a wonderful chance to learn about academia while adding a service element to the Ambassador’s résumé or graduate school application.
This is a competitive selection process and a limited number of Ambassador slots are available to only the best applicants.
Applications due: March 1, 2016 (early application is encouraged)
The Student Ambassador Role and Benefits
- serve in an administrative or potentially a supervisory role during the convention
- serve a minimum of 10 hours of time that will be contracted with the First VP or Executive Director
- receive a special invitation to attend one Executive Council meeting (attendance is not mandatory to receive this scholarship)
- work on tasks such as coordinating with fellow Ambassadors to work on special projects or convention planning, serve as a liaison between First VP and hotel staff, oversee student volunteers, interact with IG chairs to record panel attendance, assist with logistics, or other duties coordinated between the First VP and the individual Ambassador
- be identified on Convention badges
- have registration fees waived for ECA 2016, which should be listed on future résumés and applications as “Recipient of the ECA Student Ambassador Scholarship”
- leave with official letter of recommendation related to their tasks from ECA president
Student Ambassador Requirements
- Ambassadors must be currently registered at a collegiate institution and be in good standing with that institution
- Ambassadors must be available to attend the Convention for at least 2 days (day and time availability will be considered in the application review)
- Ambassadors may sit on no more than 2 regular session or USC panels total but will have time to attend numerous panels and events
- Ambassadors must behave and dress professionally (in professional/office work attire) during both convention attendance as well as after hours events during the days of the convention and while completing Ambassador tasks
Applications are due March 1, 2016 (early application is encouraged) to First VP, Jason S. Wrench. The student should fill out the online application linked below and submit it. The next step will be to register for the convention when it opens in February - no application will be considered until the registration is complete. (if a student is selected as an ambassador, the convention registration fees will be waived and refunded) and then fill out the application .
