NAM Leads Charge Against Miscellaneous Tariff Bill

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) has been leading the business effort to have Congress begin the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB) process. The MTB would suspend import duties on essential manufacturing inputs that are unavailable from domestic sources. The current MTB expires at the end of the year, and failure to have a new MTB would result in a tax increase on manufacturers.

The NAM’s work is paying off, and this week Congressman Tom Reed (R-NY) introduced an NAM-backed letter from House freshmen to House leadership that urged the commencement of the MTB process because the measure is not an earmark or a “limited tariff benefit.” Once a tariff is suspended, anyone in the United States who wants to import that particular product will benefit from the tariff reduction.
