Hose Safety Institute Nears Milestone, Readies New Guidelines

Fairlawn - HSIIn 2011, NAHAD introduced its Hose Safety Institute, encompassing scores of member companies and hundreds of distributor and manufacturer volunteers, supported by an Advisory Council of leading end users, all focused on delivering and maintaining hose assembly safety, quality and reliability.

The Institute’s foundations were the NAHAD Hose Assembly Guidelines; specification, design and fabrication guides for industrial, composite, hydraulic, corrugated metal and fluoropolymer hose assemblies, as well as guides for ducting and custom made hose. Since 2005 the Guidelines have served as valuable reference, training and marketing resources, as well as exceptional employee educational tools when coupled with the ten online Guidelines examination and certificate programs. Measuring, compensating and motivating key employees have always been at the heart of sustaining profitability, and the Guidelines exams and certificates have provided an exceptional component in support of those goals.

To date, over 3,900 certificates have been issued to NAHAD members who have successfully completed the Guidelines exams. Their efforts, and their company’s support of employee training, are a testament to their commitment to safety. As NAHAD approaches the 4,000 certificate milestone, we thank Randy Kish for sending along this photo from the Fairlawn office of Goodyear Engineered Products. In the next few weeks, the Institute will unveil its new Handbook for the Specification & Design of Safe Hose Assemblies, a comprehensive updating of all seven Hose Assembly Guidelines. This new publication will be available in print and electronic format and will contain all Guidelines in one easy-to-use format. In addition, five new online exams will be introduced, based on the updated and expanded content of the Handbook. Pilot testing of the new exams is underway now.

Hose Safety Institute members are eligible NAHAD members who have also agreed to comply with the Guidelines and to support the Institute’s commitment to hose assembly safety, quality and reliability. Institute members receive special benefits, including the free electronic Handbook, reduced prices on the print Handbook and access to the online exams. Complete details are available on the Institute web site.
