North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC seeks a creative leader to oversee its IT and Engineering Department.
The Director of IT and Engineering supervises a department in charge of the technology that supports a staff of nearly 50 public radio professionals, six transmitter sites, two major production facilities and three small news bureaus. North Carolina Public Radio stations serve an estimated 300,000 listeners every week. The news and information station is frequently the top rated station in the Raleigh Market. This position is accountable for strategic, tactical and personnel leadership, project management, planning, acquisition, maintenance, support, execution, compliance, budget and communication for WUNC’s broadcast, business, IT, security and telecom technologies. The position requires a breadth and depth of vision, knowledge and decision-making needed for a complex infrastructure of hardware, networks and delivery systems. The position is responsible for managing and enhancing the technical operations and facilities that allow WUNC to grow and fulfill its strategic goals. He/she will act as a technology strategist and will serve as a part of WUNC’s senior management. The Director of IT and Engineering will provide WUNC’s senior leaders with counsel to help drive decision-making on all matters related to business planning and integration of all aspects of WUNC’s facilities and technology. The Director of IT and Engineering will lead a team of audio and IT personnel who work to support the broader mission of the station and the reporters, producers and broadcasters who produce the programming each day. The mandate for this position is to insure that WUNC-wide daily operational requirements are fulfilled in a fiscally sustainable manner. The daily operations include: IT network integrity, production operations and systems, broadcast distribution integrity and internet distribution integrity among others. The ideal candidate will be an experienced manager and have considerable hands-on experience in IT infrastructure and broadcast engineering.
Requirements include: • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information systems, Broadcast Engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive networking related experience such as network design, analysis or network management; • Or an Associate’s Degree in Electronics or Networking Technology and six years of progressive networking related experience; • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Essential Qualities include: • A commitment to the mission and goals of public radio. • Ability to communicate and interact with a wide variety of individuals, including effective team building skills • Experience in multiple IT disciplines • Ability to critically evaluate and troubleshoot complex problems • Demonstrated success in budget management, technical project management and team coordination • Ability to perform under times of extreme pressure while maintaining composure and leadership authority • Proven experience in managing a technology and operations function from a technical, financial, and managerial point of view • Thorough understanding of IP routing and networking, load balancing, network firewalls and security, in addition to audio over IP network and transmission practices • Strong operational background and ability to design broadcast production systems and processes • Ability to implement excellent customer service based processes and experience managing a service desk environment Preferred
Qualifications Include: • Currently in a technology & operations leadership role with experience with broadcast audio and IP networks as well as digital asset management. • At least ten years of experience in a digital production/distribution environment with five years in an executive level technology leadership position. • Experience in major enterprise level technology construction or renovation projects • Exposure to broadcast, digital media, news or other content-related industry is desirable • Public Radio listener
