Description

North Carolina Public Radio, WUNC-FM, the public radio station licensed to the University of North Carolina, seeks a full time Assistant News Director for Talk.

The Assistant News Director for Talk will lead production of the daily, live interview program The State of Things. The program is host-driven and includes interviews, news, and analysis about events, issues, and the arts in North Carolina. It is one of the most visible extensions of North Carolina Public Radio’s public service to the people of North Carolina. The Assistant News Director for Talk coordinates the work of the team of producers of The State of Things. This includes writing and editing written material for the program, as well as conducting research and booking guests. The Assistant News Director for Talk also works with the News Director in setting the agenda for WUNC’s daily news service to listeners.

The position is based in Durham with occasional work at the station’s Chapel Hill office. It requires a flexible schedule with occasional weekend work and occasional travel around the state. The position also requires participation in on-air fund drives, station promotional events and staff meetings.

A Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in communication, journalism or related field. A Master’s degree is beneficial. Candidates must have a minimum of five years experience as a journalist and/or radio producer. Experience with standard recording, editing and broadcast equipment is strongly preferred, as well as experience in public radio.
