TWC Sponsors "First Amendment Day"
For the second year in a row, NCCTA member Time Warner Cable sponsored First Amendment Day held on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. The campus-wide, daylong event was held on September 24, 2013 and was kicked off on the steps of Carroll Hall, home to the UNC Center for Media Law and Policy.
NCCTA past president and senior director of government relations for TWC, Buck Yarborough, was on hand to welcome students and faculty to the event and spoke about the importance of first amendment protections to the cable telecommunications industry and the diversity of viewpoints and access to information the cable industry provides. “Even more than traditional video – Internet Service Providers like Time Warner Cable provide a gateway to the Internet where we’ve seen an explosion of opinion and information that none of us could have conceived of 15-years ago. We are part of an ecosystem that represents perhaps the greatest engine for promotion of democracy and free expression in history.”
The ceremony included the reading of the first amendment and comments by faculty of both the UNC School of Law and UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
