Literature Review

The National Career Development Association (NCDA) Board is establishing an annual research project to be conducted by a NCDA member and overseen by the Research Committee that will address the value and validity of career counseling and career development. The project for the current program year is intended to help support the Association's public policy initiatives by showing the importance and relevance of career counseling in meeting America's workforce needs through a review of recent research.

Research:  The project should show through an exhaustive literature review how career counseling contributes to better Worker Enjoyability Success measured through long term employment sustainability and resiliency, the first legislative initiative. The research results should result in a detailed academic technical report, a summary report for policy makers, and a recommendation for any needed further original research on the topic. A comprehensive compilation and analysis of recent relevant studies is expected.

Timeline: Applications are due by December 18, 2009. The project is expected to be awarded by mid January 2010 with a start date immediately following and a completion date no later than April 30, 2010.

Oversight:  The project will be under the supervision of the NCDA Research Committee

Applicant minimum qualifications:  Applicants must be members of NCDA in good standing with a Masters or higher degree in counseling or a closely related field.  They should have at least three years research experience in career decision making, employment outcomes or related areas with published research. Team applications are acceptable; only the team leader must be a NCDA member. NCDA Board and Committee members are not eligible.

Funding:  Total funding available for the project is no more than $2,000 based on a submitted budget with the application and payable upon satisfactory completion.

Reports:        

  • Monthly-Progress to the Research Committee           
  • Final technical, summary, and research recommendations May 1, 2010                       
  • Presentation to the Board at the July 2010 NCDA Annual Conference if able to attend; alternate plans can be made if attendance isn't possible.

  • Budget with line items (note: equipment and facility costs are not allowed, any travel costs are to be limited and fully justified)

The application should not exceed 3 pages plus resume/CV and reference letters.
