BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: Cynthia Marco Scanlon
In the career counseling field, Cynthia has held many roles. She has taught a variety of classes at the graduate level in clinical mental health programs, supervised graduate interns through their career counseling practicum and internships (her favorite role!), in addition to coordinating and teaching Career Education classes for undergraduates She is a career and personal issues counselor, was a consultant with her local school district, and counseled for many years at the local Community Mental Health Center. She loves sharing her experiences as guest lecturer at regional and national workshops and conferences, and is always energized by learning from others in the field as she travels and collaborates with key constituents through NCDA!
As a member of NCDA for over twenty years, Cynthia is excited for her role as President, after serving as President-Elect and Secretary on the NCDA Executive Board. She recently completed the GCDF training with other members of her office, finding value in sharing and learning the importance of each key member’s role as a group. Dr. Scanlon has also served in many leadership roles with her state organization, the Ohio Career Development Association, and the Ohio Association of Counselor Educators and Supervisors.
Dr. Scanlon received her Ph.D. at The University of Akron (UA) in Counselor Education, and her Master’s in Community Counseling from UA also. Her undergraduate degrees in psychology and sociology were completed at Ohio Northern University. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with the Supervision designation (LPCC-S) through the State of Ohio. In 2011, she was awarded “Outstanding Career Practitioner Award” from NCDA, and “Supervisor of the Year” by OACES, and in 2012, OCDA’s “Leadership Award” at their spring conference. She will forever be indebted to those that have led NCDA before her – learning the true meaning of leadership from past-presidents Rich Feller, Lisa Severy and Mark Danaher.
Cynthia enjoys living a “country” life with her husband, Jack (a true rocket-scientist) on many acres of forested land in a small town in Ohio. A mother (and step-mother) of five, she and Jack are very excited to welcome their first grandchild this December 2015!
