Associate Member Categories
AVAILABLE TO NEW ASSOCIATE MEMBERS ONLY; they are not available to reinstating associate members. Associate Member categories are made available to DPMs who have been in practice for 4 years or less and are broken out into first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year sub-categories:
First-Year Associate members have been in practice for less than 1 year. Status is automatically upgraded to Second-Year Associate the following fiscal year.
Second-Year Associate members have been in practice for at least 1 year but not more than 2 years. Status is automatically upgraded to Third-Year Associate the following fiscal year.
Third-Year Associate members have been in practice for at least 2 years but not more than 3 years. Status is automatically upgraded to Fourth-Year Associate the following fiscal year.
Fourth-Year Associate members have been in practice for at least 3 years but not more than 4 years. Status is automatically upgraded to Active Member the following fiscal year.

Active Member
A DPM who has been in practice for 5 years or more.

Faculty Member
(FA) A licensed DPM who works as a full-time faculty member in a college of podiatric medicine accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medicine. Full-time status shall consist of thirty-two or more clock hours in a minimum four-day work week. Application for FA membership requires evidence from their institution to the NYSPMA. Annual dues

Postgraduate Member

Honorary Member
An individual, who does not hold the DPM degree who has performed a distinguished service to podiatry, and has been recommended by the Association. Nominations for such membership must be endorsed by at least three members of this Association, and must be forwarded to the Executive Director at least thirty days prior to the convening of the House of Delegates. Any podiatrist nominated for honorary membership must be a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association. A 2/3 vote of House of Delegates members present and voting is required for the conferral of honorary membership.
Allied Member
Any person who is not a licensed podiatrist, and has an interest in the profession may be considered in this category as a member of the Association. Application for this category must be approved by a majority vote of the Board of Trustees.
Probationary Period
New members in active or associate member categories shall be probationary members for three years, pending formal review by the executive board of the division, according to criteria approved by the Board of Trustees, to confirm that the probationary member is practicing in conformity with the Association's current policies and standards.
NYSPMA offers reduced annual dues to those who qualify. To determine if you are eligible to apply, please review the descriptions below:
The following member categories (SM, LM, NPM, 5.4) are not permanent. At the beginning of the next fiscal year the DPM will be reassigned to Active Member and will be required to pay applicable dues. It is the responsibility of the DPM to contact the NYSPMA to re-apply.
Senior Member (SM)
This category is not available to Honorary and International Members.
Per the bylaws approved by the APMA House of Delegates in March 2019, a licensed DPM who is a member in good standing of this association may apply for classification as a Senior Member if said member: Has attained the age of 65 years; AND Is not actively engaged in practice for more than 20 hours per week; AND Has been in good standing for 20 *consecutive years or for an aggregate of 25 years.
Annual dues $1311.

Life Member (LM)
This category is not available to Honorary and International Members. (LM)
Per the bylaws approved by the APMA House of Delegates in March 2019, a member in good standing of this association may apply for classification as a Life Member if said member: Has completely retired and remains retired from the practice of podiatric medicine, attained the age of 65 years, AND either been a member in good standing for 20 consecutive years or for an aggregate of 30 years; OR A licensed DPM member who has been in good standing for a minimum of 50 years (aggregate).
An inactive member is not able to reinstate membership as a LM. Exempt from annual dues. APMA sends a $50.00 voluntary contribution invoice each year. There is a suggested $250 donation for those attending the annual conference.

* A break in service (consecutive years) occurs when a member allows his/her membership to lapse and rejoins at a later date but does not reinstate his/her membership back to the original membership lapse date. Any break in service may affect their future chances for Senior and Life Member categories. For example, members applying for Senior and Life Membership must have a minimum of 15 years of consecutive membership. EXAMPLE: Dr. Smith was a member from June 1, 1984, to November 1, 1992, when he resigned his membership. On June 1, 1994, Dr. Smith indicates an interest in rejoining, but is not concerned with his break in service. When he rejoins on June 1, 1994, he will show a break in service from November 1, 1992, to May 31, 1994.
The only way to mend a break in service is to pay dues for the period of time that the DPM was not a member at the time of rejoining. In this case, Dr. Smith was not a member for a period of approximately one and a half years. Dr. Smith may want to mend his membership, as he already has approximately nine consecutive years of membership. By mending, Dr. Smith will amend his record to reflect no break in service and reflect continuous membership starting on June 1, 1984. This will be a total of approximately 10 and one-half years. If he mends his membership he could be eligible for Senior or Life Membership in another four and a half years.
Non-Practicing Member (NPM)
(NPM) A DPM who has not been engaged in practice or in the dispensing of podiatric medical services for a minimum of 1 year due to taking care of a family member who is ill, raising a family, etc. The DPM must not have had his/her license revoked for any reason. Disabled Member (PDM)
A DPM who is disabled and for whom the payment of full dues would constitute a hardship, may be classified as a disabled member. “Disabled” shall mean total disability that continuously prevents the member from carrying out substantial and material professional duties; such member must be under the regular care of a physician (other than himself) and may not derive any income or profit from any activity as a podiatrist. A member classified as “disabled” shall not be eligible for any other category of membership. Disability membership shall be revoked if the member's disability has terminated and he or she is able to resume activities as a podiatrist. 5.4 Status Member
(5.4) DPM who is a current NYSPMA member in good standing (dues and assessments for the current quarter have been paid), for whom the payment of dues would constitute a hardship due to a temporary physical disability, illness, or other reasons as investigated and set forth by the NYSPMA. This category allows the member to be excused from payment of dues (all or a portion), for the current fiscal year. A non-member cannot join with 5.4 status and an inactive member cannot be reinstated as a 5.4 Status Member. 5.4 status cannot be backdated to previous fiscal years; it can only apply to the current fiscal year.
