Agricultural Purchasing Manager / Fertilizer Merchandiser

CHS Aligned Solutions is partnering with a large, member-owned agricultural cooperative in North Central Illinois near Rockford, IL to hire an Agricultural Purchasing Manager with a strong emphasis in merchandising fertilizer. This position will report directly into the CEO and will focus primarily on agronomy commodities marketing, focuses heavily in fertilizer.

Position Overview:
The Purchasing Manager will work closely with the Agronomy Department Manager and will be responsible for trading and marketing agronomy commodities for both rail and barge delivery.  This position will mostly be located in-office with occasional travel and little-to-no overnight travel.  Previous experience in commodity marketing especially fertilizer experience will be required of applicants.
 
Other responsibilities include:
 

  • Merchandise fertilizer through various vendors and sources, provide excellent recordkeeping, focus on hedging for profitability and sales/availability for local use.
  • Review requisitions, confer with vendors to obtain product or service information; such as price, availability, quality, grade of product, and delivery schedule including negotiating Freight rates (rail, barge, and trucks).
  • Hedging of agricultural commodities with ability to trade for a profit.
  • Determine method of procurement, such as direct purchase or bid. Prepares purchase orders or bid requests.
  • Review bid proposals and negotiates contracts within budgetary limitations and scope of authority.
  • Maintain purchase commitments in the company ERP system with AGRIS software.
  • Maintain procurement records, such as items or services purchased, costs, delivery, product quality, performance, and inventories.
  • Discusses defective or unacceptable goods or services with quality control personnel, end users, vendors, and others to determine source of trouble and take corrective action.


Required Qualifications:
 

  • 3-5 five years’ experience as a purchasing agent; experience working in hedging commodities
  • Previous experience in rail and barge delivery options
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Applications, Word, Excel, and
  • AGRIS background and experience is preferred
  • Possess strong teambuilding, communication, time management and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated, work independently with or without supervision
  • Thorough knowledge of purchasing regulations, principles, methods, and standards
  • Interact with customers and coworkers in a positive, professional manner
