Final Days to Receive Early Registration Discount for Grain Bin Entry Tech Rescue Training

Early registration ends July 18

When stored grain forms hard bridges, columns and other irregularities, those working to correct it find themselves at risk of becoming trapped inside bins, creating the need for local firefighters to respond. However, many first responders lack the training necessary to handle these type of situations.

To help promote grain bin knowledge and safety, the Ohio AgriBusiness Association, in partnership with the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and the Safety and Technical Rescue Association, will offer its 2016 Bin Entry Tech Rescue Training program for firefighters, first responders and grain personnel Aug. 23-26 in Sidney, Ohio.

“This four-day program is designed to give grain professionals and first responders hands-on training with grain bin rescue for emergency situations at commercial operations and farms,” said OABA President and CEO Chris Henney. “Our work with these partners is part of OABA’s commitment to provide continuous education to help our members be efficient, productive and, most importantly, safe while doing their part to bolster Ohio’s No. 1 industry.”

SATRA will conduct the training under NFPA and OSHA standards, which will be lead by professional firefighters. Training topics include confined space rescue, incident command, basic rope systems, fall protection, engulfment rescue, patient packaging, fall prevention and atmospheric monitoring.

The first two days of the training will build practical skills, including rope and harness work, to prepare participants for advanced scenarios. During days three and four, participants will learn rescue procedures using 130-foot grain bins at the GEAPS Safety Training Center, where they will work in teams of eight to plan and lead rescues in bins, with SATRA teachers on-site to monitor and check work. At the conclusion of the training, students will work through an entire rescue scenario, from the first call through the grain bin rescue.

“Several successful grain bin rescues across the state have been performed by fire departments or grain personnel who have attended the Bin Entry Tech Training Program,” said Steve Queen, training coordinator for the Grain Safety Training Center. “Working harder, working smarter, and being prepared for emergency situations such as those outlined in this training makes all the difference when it comes to saving lives and the valuable performance of those charged with keeping all of us safe.”
