Early Planting Affects Crop Insurance

Warm Weather is Enticing for Early Planting

With the unusually warm weather in Ohio this March, some farmers have undoubtedly considered getting a head start on planting. In fact, some farmers in Hull, Indiana already have corn out of the ground according to Ohio Ag Net/Ohio’s Country Journal.

However, many are reminding producers that crops planted before the earliest planting date – April 6 for corn and April 21 for soybeans in Ohio – may have negative impacts on crop insurance.

Brian Frieden, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency Director for the Springfield Region, reminds producers that crops planted before the earliest planting date are not eligible for replant payments, but the insurance guarantee is not impacted as long as producers follow good farming practices.
