Agriculture Groups Come Together to Support Domino’s Pizza
Order Domino’s Pizza This Weekend to Support A Company Who Supported Agriculture
Domino’s Pizza has taken a stand for agriculture by rejecting a proposal by the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) to require its pork suppliers to only buy pork from producers who do not use sow gestation stalls. This weekend, the agriculture community is rallying together to thank Domino’s for their “reliance on animal experts to determine the best way to raise an animal that’s used for food” (according to a Domino’s spokesperson), rather than choosing to accept HSUS’s proposal.
To support Domino’s, the industry is encouraging everyone to order Domino’s Pizza this weekend (May 18-20). The Ag Pizza Party (as various industry groups are calling it) offers a chance for those of us involved in the food and agriculture industry, and anyone else concerned about agriculture and food production, to thank Domino’s by ordering pizza and sharing a “Thank You” for their shareholders’ rejection of the proposal – be sure to share your “Thank You” vocally or in writing.
Facebook Groups have formed, and bloggers have rallied around the idea, first proposed by fifth-generation farmer Chris Chinn in a post on the blog Just Farmers. A Facebook Group, Farmers Paying it Forward, also offers a chance for people to show their support for the idea.
Domino’s statement explained that the pork the company uses comes from farms around the country “that use a variety of animal-management systems, including from farms that do not use gestation stalls.” They also cited information from both the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) that pointed out that there are advantages and disadvantages to both cage-free and caged pork production methods.
