Indiana family farm honored as 4R advocate

The Fertilizer Institute recently honored an Indiana dairy farm for its nutrient management practices.

George Brand of Brand Dairy Farm of Waterloo, Ind. was named a 2014 4R Advocate and received an expense-paid trip to the 2014 Commodity Classic in San Antonio, Texas. He operates a 2,500-acre row crop operation and dairy farm. Brand was nominated by Terry Bechman of The Andersons, Inc., also of Waterloo. Variable-rate fertilizer application, plant tissue sampling and erosion control are three examples of how Brand boosts yield, while protecting groundwater.

Brand will be part of the fertilizer industry’s outreach to encourage nutrient stewardship practices that enhance farm profitability and are good for the environment.

The 4R Nutrient Stewardship program focuses on nutrient best management practices that address the right fertilizer source, at the right rate, the right time and in the right place.
