Model Supervisory Plan for Cryotherapy

Model Supervisory Plan for Performing Cryotherapy

The Ohio State Medical Board has approved a model supervisory plan that can be used by dermatologists to delegate the performance of cryotherapy to a PA.

The model plan cannot be used universally as there are restrictions.

1.  The supervising physician must be board certified or board eligible in dermatology.

2.  The PA must have more than two years of clinical experience in a dermatologic practice in order to perform cryotherapy without the physician seeing the patient prior to the procedure.  If the PA has less than two years of clinical experience the physician must see the patient first.

The process for submitting the model plan to the Medical Board requires the supervising physician to read the model plan that outlines the level of supervision, didactic and clinical training requirements and a quality assurance plan.  The physician then completes and signs a simple one page application form.

The advantage of using the model supervisory plan is to save time.  The application will not need to go through the same process as requesting a special services plan.

Unfortunately, only dermatologists may use the model plan.  Physicians that are not dermatologists, family practice physicians, for example, will still need to submit a special services plan application to the Medical Board for approval.
