Ray Sumpter is a Somerset Indiana native and a Marine Air Corps veteran of World War II. Coach Sumpter has a BS degree from Defiance College(1951) and a MS degree from Indiana University(1956)

He was a baseball coach at Bryan High School for 35 years with a record of 311-220 (.586). His teams held Sectional Titles for twelve years,five District Titles, three Regional Titles and won the State Championship in 1975 beating Medina Buckeye 4-0, and Hamilton Badin 5-4.

Coach Sumpter retired from teaching and coaching at the end of the 1985-1986 school year. In August 1986, the baseball field in Bryan, Ohio was dedicated as Sumpter Field,and today stands as one of the top baseball facilities in Ohio.

Ray Sumpter passed away on August 13,2002. Survivors include his wife, Jeanne , who still resides in Bryan, his three daughters, Nancy Sumpter, Carol Peggs, Sue Sumpter and grandson, David Peggs.
