 Soybean Farmers Highlighted at the 2012 Ohio State Fair

Soybean Day to be Saturday, August 4^th

WORTHINGTON, Ohio – The 2012 Ohio State Fair begins today and soybean farmers are participating in a big way.  The Ohio Soybean Council (OSC) and soybean checkoff is excited to be one of six presenting sponsors of this year’s fair.  Fairgoers are invited to learn more about this important crop and meet some of the men and women who work hard to grow it at the OSC display in the Nationwide Donahey Ag and Hort building.

 “From cooking oil and salad dressings to livestock feed and bioproducts, soybeans are a much bigger part of our everyday lives than many realize,” said John Motter, OSC chairman and Hancock County soybean farmer.  “We are very excited to be a presenting sponsor of the 2012 Ohio State Fair and to have the opportunity to introduce soybeans and soybean farmers to fairgoers.”

 Additionally, OSC is a presenting sponsor of the 2012 Junior Livestock Shows, the O’Neill Swine Building, Voinovich Livestock and Trade Center and Rabbit & Poultry Pavilion.

 “Livestock and poultry farmers are not only our neighbors, they’re our biggest customer,” said Motter.  “We are very proud to be a part of the Junior Livestock Shows and buildings this year to highlight the connection soybeans have in feeding our livestock and poultry.”

 Fairgoers will also see a connection to soybeans in the delicious fair food.  A variety of vendors on the grounds will be cooking with trans-fat free, low saturated fat soybean oil this year.  Look for the heart emblem in vendor windows to see which ones are using this new, healthier soybean oil.

 Soybean Day

On Saturday, August 4^th, OSC will host Soybean Day at the Ohio State Fair.  Several Ohio soybean farmers will be at the Cardinal Gate entrance to greet fairgoers and explain what soybean farmers in the state are doing to sustain the lives of people and animals, while taking great care of the environment around them.

“A lot of people are several generations removed from farming and they have questions,” said Motter.  “In fact, many people have never even met a farmer.  On Soybean Day, and throughout the fair, they will have that opportunity.  We encourage everyone to come by and meet with us because one thing about farmers is certain.  We love to talk about agriculture.”
