Ohio Soybean Council Teams Up with 10TV to Launch Biodiesel Car Giveaway
The Ohio Soybean Council (OSC) and soybean checkoff launched the ‘Biodiesel Car Giveaway’ as part of its ongoing effort to raise consumer awareness and enthusiasm for biodiesel—America’s advanced biofuel.
Ohioans who sign up for the promotion will be entered for a chance to win a one-year lease on a new fuel efficient, diesel-engine Volkswagen Jetta TDI. Entrants must be at least 18 years of age and a legal resident of Ohio to be eligible to win. To enter the contest, participants will be asked to go to the Ohio Soybean Council Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ohiosoybeancouncil), “like” us, and sign up.
The promotion will run through May 27, 2012.
“The Ohio Soybean Council is very excited about this promotion and the chance to tell Ohioans about the benefits of biodiesel,” said John Motter, OSC chairman and soybean farmer from Hancock County. “Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning, environmentally-friendly fuel, and is commonly made from soybeans which are grown and processed right here in Ohio. That offers significant value to consumers, brings revenue to our local and state economies, and reduces our country’s dependence on foreign oil.”
Benefits of Biodiesel
Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative diesel fuel produced from domestic, renewable resources such as soybean oil and other agricultural byproducts and waste. Compared to petroleum-based diesel fuel, biodiesel is more environmentally friendly, reducing lifecycle carbon emissions by 57 – 86%, which makes it the best carbon reduction tool of any liquid fuel commercially available. It is also the first fuel to meet the EPA standards for "advanced" biofuel.

OSC and OSA Applaud Federal Support
for Bio-based Products
WORTHINGTON, Ohio – The Ohio Soybean Council (OSC) and the Ohio Soybean Association (OSA) applaud the recent announcement by The White House that encourages federal agencies to take steps to ensure the federal BioPreferred program is fully implemented. This increased emphasis on bio-based product procurement will help drive innovation and create jobs in rural America.
Established by the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, the federal BioPreferred program was created in an effort to drive demand for bio-based products at federal agencies.
This announcement is a significant move to examine federal purchasing procedures to ensure the use of bio-based products. With the announcement, the administration is calling on federal agencies to follow Executive Order 1314, which requires sustainable acquisition goals and milestones to be reported annually and also requires agencies to ensure that 95 percent of new contracts for products and services advance sustainable acquisition.
Additionally, the announcement directs the Secretary of Agriculture to increase bio-based products in the program by 50 percent in one year and requires the U.S. Department of Agriculture to work with procurement technical assistance centers to train and assist bio-based companies in taking advantage of opportunities within this program.
Both OSA and OSC have long supported the creation of new, green products that utilize soybeans as an ingredient, as well as promotion of these products to both domestic and international markets.
