Three Ohio babies die every day, and that our black babies die at more than twice the rate of white babies?  Ohio is near the bottom among states in preventing infant death.  This is a public health crisis and it’s everyone’s problem.  Fortunately, Ohio is now becoming aware of this challenge and a groundswell of action is growing.

I help coordinate the Ohio Collaborative to Prevent Infant Mortality, a statewide organization interested in pursuing all avenues which will lead to healthier women and babies who live to see their first birthday.  We are interested in the role pharmacists can play in addressing this public health crisis.  One helpful thing the Ohio Pharmacists Association can do right away it to alert your members to the problem, inform them about the upcoming 2nd Biennial Infant Mortality Summit, and urge them to attend and spread the word in their communities.  This event is an opportunity to join with 1,500 other interested Ohioans from both inside and outside the health professions to learn more about infant mortality and what we can do about it at the community level.  This free summit will take place Dec. 3-4 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center- details and registration are at the link above.

We know that for women to have successful pregnancies resulting in healthy babies, we need much greater emphasis on helping them achieve optimal health before they conceive.  I would especially like to draw the attention of your members to a breakout session, one of more than 40, in which Natalie DiPietro Mager, PharmD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Raabe College of Pharmacy, Ohio Northern University will present on Partnering with Pharmacists to Provide Preconception Care.  We think that pharmacists have a vital role to play in their communities in achieving better health for women of reproductive age, and this session will explore this role.
