Pharmacist Training Program for Adult Immunizations -July 23

The next Pharmacist Training Program for Adult Immunizations will be held on Wednesday, July 23. Beginning June 6, registration for this program is available to current OPA members only. Non-member registration will open after June 13. The program will be held at the OPA office, 2674 Federated Blvd, Columbus 43235.

Pharmacists who complete the July 23, 2014 immunization training will also receive the MMR home-study CE article and the MMR protocol at no charge.
The Ohio Pharmacists Association was instrumental in the passage of SB 248 (amending section 4729.41) in 2001 and SB 58 in 2007 which allows Ohio pharmacists to administer immunizations for influenza to individuals 14 years of age and older, and the following adult immunizations: diphtheria, hepatitis A and hepatitis B, meningitis, pertussis, pneumonia, and tetanus. Pharmacists desiring to give immunizations must:
• complete a course in drug administration approved
by the State Board of Pharmacy;
• receive and maintain certification to perform basic life-support procedures by completing a basic life-support training course certified by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association;
• practice in accordance with a definitive set of treatment guidelines specified in a protocol established by a physician and approved by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy.
Goals. The goals of this program are to train pharmacists to set up an adult immunization program for diphtheria, hepatitis A and hepatitis B, influenza, meningococcal, pertussis, pneumococcal, tetanus, and zoster; and to train pharmacists to properly administer vaccines and meet the requirements established by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy for recordkeeping and for the use of physician protocols. Participants must demonstrate proper sterile technique and administration of both IM and SQ injections during the program, and should wear clothing with easy access to the deltoid muscle.
Objectives. At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:
1. describe the immune system including types of antigens, types of immunity and the immune system reaction to immunizations;
2. list the disease states and types of immunity associated with diphtheria, meningococcal, influenza, pertussis, pneumococcal, tetanus, zoster, and hepatitis A & B immunizations;
3. identify the appropriate administration schedules, route of administration, injection sites, dosages, precautions and contraindications, proper storage requirements, appropriate patient populations, and appropriate monitoring and treatment of the patient for adverse reactions for each of these immunizations, diphenhydramine and epinephrine;
4. demonstrate proper sterile technique in preparation and administration of injectable and intranasal dosage forms;
5. explain the proper disposal procedures for contaminated needles and immunizations, and the proper procedures for accidental needle sticks; and
6. describe requirements for recordkeeping and protocols as outlined by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy.

To become eligible to receive a Certificate of Achievement for this program and to meet Ohio State Board of Pharmacy criteria, participants must:
• complete the home study program with a passing grade of at least 80%
(ACPE 0129-0000-14-052-H01-P, 0.35 CEU)
• attend the live training session
(ACPE 0129-0000-14-056-L01-P, 0.45 CEU)
• show proof of current certification in CPR; if not yet certified, complete a CPR course through your local American Red Cross or American Heart Association chapter. CPR certification through any other organization does not meet Ohio law for pharmacists who administer immunizations.
To receive CE credit for the live training session, you must complete and sign the CE and evaluation form and return it to the OPA staff or office. Your CE credit will be uploaded to the CPE Monitor. The home study course should be completed before the live session; however, it is highly recommended that you complete it prior to attending the live session. The Certificate of Achievement for this program cannot be generated until all portions of the program are completed.

The Ohio Pharmacists Foundation, Inc. is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
This program has been approved by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy to qualify pharmacists to administer influenza vaccines to individuals 14 years of age and older, and adult vaccines for diphtheria, pneumonia, tetanus, pertussis, meningitis, zoster, hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
Requests for refunds, less $15 administrative fee, will be honored if received at least one week prior to the program.
